What to bring to fly fest for a novice tyer

jamiep

homeward bound
Hey lads .
So all you top notch tyers have your materials together and list of flies your going to tye . Me on the other hand have been tying for over a year now . I have no clue on what to bring to the show.
My wish is to learn how to tye drie flies a whole lot better while at this show aswell as pick up some tips and tricks from the masters .

I can tye nymphs till the cows come home but its wrapping hackles and posting wings is where my defects lie.

Anyways would love some input
Hope to see you all there

Jamie

Thanks allen i will see you up there pal. Ill bring some cdc also.
I cant wait for it been so excited all week.

Most important Jamie is bring along the materials for the fly you would like to learn. That way you keep the things you need to bring to a minimum. We'll see you there it will be a good time.:)

Oh and a light and cord if you need one to tye.

I just noticed yesterday that I have little to no dry fly hooks in size 12-16.. I do tie flys that arent streamers. Who'll have my Daiichi hooks for sale at the show? I have some hundred packs on order but wouldnt mind getting a few at the show. Other then that if I get it together I will bring some keel hooks, bucktail and bou, along with a silver pheasant and some gold grade necks.

Why not list here what you are brining, but what you are also looking for.

Keeled streamer hooks? I'm looking for keeled hooks. Can you still find the mustads someplace, or are they a different brand?

You may want to pick up some hooks before coming up as I don't believe there will be anyone selling tying supplies unless it's personal stock. I could be wrong but just a thought.

JamieP:

Pick a pattern(s) that you wish to tie and bring the materials for that.

The best part about Fly Fest is that YOU get to choose what you wish to tie and the style you wish to tie it in.

I thought you had to choose a Catskill style pattern my first year. But nothing could have been farther from the truth.

I was tying a Iso-nymph pattern and the man sitting next to me was none other than Floyd Franke.

Like standing in the batters box and having Carl Yastrzemski sitting behind home plate watching. Anyway...

I was fussing over getting it perfect and Mr. Franke seeing me working so hard to get it just so.. leaned over and said, "The fish are not going to be that fussy about it."

So I relaxed and enjoyed the rest of the day tying flies and chatting it up with the rest of the group.

ask JB who Catskill John is and try to sit with him. You want to sit next to someone that can tie Catskill dry flies and Wet flies.. He is your man to show you how.

After all CATSKILL JOHN is the MAYOR of the Catskills.

Tell him AK is your friend.

What you don't have, you can meet up with a bunch of the people that will be tying at FLY FEST at Catskill Fly Shop in the morning and pick it up what ever you need there.

Just tell Dennis you are from Joisy.... he'll do you right!

Jamie

AK has good advice (I have to say that because he's one of my agents..). It's pretty informal. Bring stuff for what you want to tie..and just have fun. People are helpful...just ask.

I'll probably be wandering around there somewhere....

What about the autographs Mike? If I bring my book are by chance run into you are you going to sign it, or will i have to buy another copy to get one thats signed?

Sure

Catskill John asked me yesterday if I can sign books. I said sure...no problem. And then posted a note on another forum saying I would be happy to do so.

I guess I'm there wearing my Catskill Museum Trustee hat. I have to make sure AK doesn't start any fist fights...or falls into the pond...

I most often drive a dark Green Wrangler with NY plates. The plates are "QUILLGDN"...what else....

Wylie, bring it, he will.

Knowing you - you will have 100's of Catskill questions for Mike.

When I got it I stayed up all night just reading it.

Well, I looked at all the pictures first to see if it was worth it, then I read as many of the words that I knew.
