What do you guys plan to use for opening week in NJ....??

Werloc

Don't Know Nothin Yet
Just got my Vacation approved for the opening week of trout in NJ. I've been tying woolly buggers all winter. Just wonder what other flies I should stock up on for the first week starting April 9th..?

Could have used the buggers on the warmer winter days, but your lack of success is due to the large profile fly. Fish are very lazy in the winter...Midges from 18-24 are the target flies in winter...

As for opening day, large white zonkers is what im using...Those "freshly" stocked brookies will be creaming them...

Also, I would have planned your vacation week when bait season closes, and the hendricksons start to pop mid-end of april...Opening week is just a meat fest, nothing too exciting...

Yeah, but I was lucky to get any vaction this April. Anyway, good to know....;) Thanks

Last year there were hendricksons on opening day here in N.J, so I would have some pt's and red quills tied up. But all the standard nymph will produce fish. Also fish those buggers on a down stream approach let them swing should bring a few stockies to hand.

It may be a lot like winter, so go big with a bugger/streamer and wake them up or small and subtle. One very successful guide I know uses size 16 Zebra midges a good amount - just tie them slim. A Rainbow Warrior probably never hurt as a small fly option.

Big colorful wet flies. Mentioned it in Musky thread, but look up Eugene Macri wet flies for some good early season patterns and advise.

Ill go with Trout Hunter on when to take vacation. Definitely if you can, take in mid to late May. I took early June for the Upper D this year. Cant wait.

Thanks for the fly suggestions. Yeah, as far as Vacation, I had 40 hours to use or loose, so I "had" to take it. They wanted me to take it this month though, but I was able to at least push it to a week I could fish. I still have 3 weeks vac to use before January, so I'm good.

If you want to use your vacation and it will be a vacation wisely spent, take a trip to the Ausable...youll never want to leave...and you may use those 3 weeks up cnosecutively ocne you arrive... its beautiful and more fish than you could possibly imagine...

yes they are good flies to use all mentioned ...in the last week and half have done well ...10 dronestone ...yellow black, 14 copper john, and a 16 black copper john, and some very nice browns to 17"...fishing 1 - 4 pm KLG....5x...sorry no pictures

Yeah, well, even if I don't catch anything, at least I ain't gunna be at werk...lol I just tied up some wooly buggers using the lighter colors mentioned above. I also have a bunch of muddler minows I guess would work ok, plus I'll just buy some white zonkers. I think I'm good. Just have to repair my leaky waders this weekend....;)

Simms: I am curious why you are specifically using white. Is it to get "provocation" strikes, or do they resemble a particular food item? Are they specific to early season? Related to water level and anticipated clarity? I have never been productive with a white streamer, but I am certainly willing to try. \

I caught a lot of largemouth bass on white maribou jigs as a kid, but I have never used anything similar targeting trout.

Pssst, the secret word is "Red Hot." (a Green Weenie tied with fluorescent red chenille).

Wouldn't that be a RED WEENIE then -- Oh Boy you need a doctor QUICK -- You went from a Green Weenie to a Red Weenie -- Last time I heard of someone with that problem they died the next day LMFAO

In all seriousness -- A GRHE A PT Caddis Or Stones should all produce fish

Peace
Dan

That's what tossing junk will do to you. Maybe I should just grab Walt's or Vladi's worm - but that doesn't sound quite right either. At least Vladi's worm involves "safe fishing".

why isnt anyone going to use powerbait? i like to mix the pink and yellow together.
