Wear Orange!

Hey guys just a reminder for those of you who don't know - it's buck (and bear) week here in NJ so if you're out fishing this week - especially in a state park or WMA - I suggest you put some fluorescent orange on.

And leave the bearskin coat at home!


Story Time!
The story (as I was told it) goes like this: In Maine, bear season overlaps college football season as it does in many places. Well a number of years ago, a couple of college boys stopped in to a general store on the way to a football game. One was wearing a bearskin coat, as was the style back in those days.

An old timer playing checkers by the stove took one look at the boys poking around the store and said "son its bayah season here in the State of Maine, and your gonna get yah dahm fool head shot off, running around dressed up like a bayah the way you ahh."

"I'll be fine, I've got an orange hat," the college boy smugly replied.

"T'won't make any difference," the old timer shot back. "They'll just think you're a dahm smaht bayah."

Yessir. The 6-day militias were out driving deer this morning down my way. They love this snow! I'm sure there are plenty of them illegally hunting on the property I manage, but whatever. I'm in the warm office... imp:

I'll just bet you are in the vacinity of fort dix. A lot of guys in that area really like to do that. I know a bunch of those chuckle heads. Fun to drink with, would never hunt with em...

Sorry, you're thinking about 60 miles NORTH of where I live, as the bullet flies. As the car drives, about 1.5 hours north. But I know what you're talking about at Dix. I've seen them up that way too. Down here these guys wait 359 days until the next season, all reved up to go all year long. They are nutz. And by "militia", I mean exactly that. They are roving bands of hunters with walkie-talkies and strategic attack plans, and even have special codes for when they see deer or CO's .

I always wear my orange vest or my red flannel in the woods this time of year, even on my property and the surrounding 1000+ acres I manage, and even on Sundays. I never know who is out there, and I've got some mighty large deer living here. I've already been shot at, too, but that was a long time ago, and thankfully not where I'm living now.

Last Saturday only bowhunters and small game hunters should have been in the woods. This Saturday will be another story.

No kidding I met a guy at the range in Clinton last year, coke-bottle glasses, Remington 870 pump. He set up a photo-realistic deer silouette poster about 30 yards out, then when the line went hot BLAM BLAM BLAM three shots as fast as he could work that slide.

Eybrows went up all along the bench. When he went to get his buckshot splattered target at the next cease fire, he commented "That will do. You hit a deer pretty much anywhere and you kill it".

"You got your license yet?" someone asked. "Yup"

"Where are you from?" was the next question. "PA" he replied, "I got an out of state license."

"Where are you hunting" was next. "Why?" he asked suspiciously.

"Because wherever you are is one place I don't want to be anywhere near." (Chuckles along the bench)

"Hmmf"

And he left...
