Upper D on Thursday

Floated on Thursday with my brother. River was up again from previous evenings rain event. Paraleps and Hendrickson’s on the water starting around 1pm. The fish were clearly not looking up. Water temp around 45 degrees on a day where the sun struggled to break through the clouds. Chucked streamers all day and managed to move some fish. My brother is new to flyfishing and had a blast hooking 3 but unable to land them. I managed a solid Brown to the boat and later a size 4 drink and disorderly altered its flight path and buried itself in the meaty part of my hand. Kudos to the guide who executed the mono extraction procedure about as flawlessly as it can be done. Great to hang with my brother. Can’t wait to get him on the water when the hatch is happening and we have fish looking up. Given my travel schedule I will not see a hatch until mid May unless I play hooky. Another year and the fish gods have denied me a chance to fish the Hendrickson hatch. Oh well

Nice dink of an upper D. fish. I've been seeing a lot of this on the shop reports this season. Aren't there any good fish on the upper D. anymore? Early spring/streamer time was always nothing but BIG fish. These fish might be nice by NJ and most northeast PA stream standards, but they sure aren't good fish for the upper D. or a sign that the fishery is in good shape. This one looks fat at least. Some of the browns posted by the shops so far this year were concerningly skinny for this time of year.

Glad to hear you had a good time with your brother. That's the important part.

I heard that you tried to take a photo, but you couldn't see your phone's screen through all the tears.

If they successfully coached you into catching a fish, even a 14 incher like the one in the photo, they obviously are highly skilled. It would be free advertising...

I'm far from sane,but what's sane about tying dead chicken feathers on a hook and waving an $800 stick around to maybe catch a trout and then let it go. Sane would be 2 drift boats and a seine net and a fish fry!Lol!

Forget traditional guided trips on the Upper D. I'm going to outfit a double decker Party pontoon boat with a jet drive outboard and charter party boat style fishing trips with real men with bait casting reels with bait and burlap bags to haul their catch back to their cars ,I'll have mates chumming with powerbait.We'll have a fileting station and wading fisherman will be known as speed bumps ,or buoys to locate the channel .forget catch and release ,catch ,filet , beer batter And 300 degree hot oil. The only reason Lee Wulff promoted catch and release is because he never went to a good fish fry....
