Tying the Dorato Hare's Ear

Matt Grobert

6/0 Olive Danville
Since everyone is surely missing the fine fly tying videos produced by the Beetle, here's one to ease the pain. The smoke detector had a fresh battery, sorry to disappoint.

I'm starting a collection to buy Matt some more Danville 6/0 olive thread. Who's in with me?

Great fly, guys. Yes, even you, you lurker (you know who you are):)

Brian, you killed another one of my threads posting this crap...........:)

Well now that I've killed it, let me say I had never heard of this fly before. As for skittering dries, that is something I rarely do, but when that is required, I find it deadly. I can see why this pattern would skitter well. Other than to LBS most later winter/early spring times is where I find skittering dries deadly, at least locally. I have a fond memory of fishing the Firehole in Yellowstone nearly 7 summers ago when they had a huge caddis coming off they called the Henderson caddis (I haven't ever found what species it was). I used a size 12 tan elk hair which wasn't big enough, and skittered it and got a rise every cast during the hatch. That was one of those days where a typical dead drifted dry caught far fewer fish than when you lifted that rod tip high and skated the fly over the surface. I guess the key to fishing that style has always been about the hackle as elk hairs that I was throwing were tied with body wraps and skittered well. Same when I'm after risers during the LBS egg laying stage and I'm using full hackle dries.

I first heard of this fly in one of Dick Taller's first books back in the early 70's.

This fly is one of my best dries up on the Delaware system this time of the year. It works during the caddis emergences and it has worked very well for me during QG, Hendrickson hatches. I use it like most guys use the Adams. Dead-drift it mostly, but when they are on those bouncing caddis, give it a twitch and get ready.

Pat,

The very first article Dick wrote for Fly Fishermen mag was on this pattern back in 1973.

I always have a few Doratos in my box in smaller sizes with olive bodies. It's a great fly. Did very well with it on the Farmington in riffle water when the fish were being fussy to other flies, and had a great day this year on a WTS with it when the fish were hitting, but not eating my usual go to patterns.

Great video Matt.

Wasn't there a time Matt when you used to advocate the use of hare's mask guard hairs for the tail? Perhaps I'm confusing this with something else.

I will tie a few up and try these next weekend in the Delaware System. Thanks Matt. Great video as always.
