Trapped steelhead

Hi I was steelhead fishing in my local trib. yesterday and saw a recently built beaver dam and their is still a bunch of steelhead in front of it. It is a pretty big dam, and the fish can not get over it, and back to the lake. do you think these fish will die or adapt to living in the stream? The water gets really low in the summer but there is one deep hole they can go in. What do you guys think?

They can live in the stream, of course, but if it's small they may run out of food or get picked off by predators eventually. Big fish need lots of food, more than the average hand full of nymphs each day like what would hold them over when they were juveniles.

I don't think a beaver dam is much of an obstacle to a steelhead if it is in decent shape. Look what they have to jump to get into the hatchery - and that is designed so they get there easily. If they are weak from spawning stress and can't get over it then I think they aren't going to recover in a little stream.

Dude tear the Beaver Dam Down -- Wont hurt the Beavers -- The fish will go back to the lake and the Beavers will rebuild the Dam -- No Biggie

That's because Steelhead have very poor vision at night and will never see it coming.

That is why on the Salmon River you cannot fish till a half hour before sun rise and a half hour after sun set.

They want to give the fish a fighting chance.
