Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

Tilley

got a tilley and it's ok. the hype is better than the hat, though for sure, it's a very good hat.

at this stage in life, a hat is a hat is a hat. more often than not a ball cap type is more than sufficient.

Tilleys are good.

The price seems to come from the quality and some hype (or good marketing).

Personally, I use waxed hats in rain and October. and a light ball cap in summer.

James,

Waxed is for the stuff we put on the hats to make 'em waterproof. Like the Koolah hats (Aussie one).

Not quite as breatheable as say an OR Gortex hat, ... they DO keep ya' dry though.
The Girlfriend uses a Koolah and I use a Digger.

Whats a waxed hat? Is this a Canadian term for waterproof or a specific product?

I'll have to ask my wife, she is Canadian.

I will have to send a formal letter of protest to the Halifax Board of Education that they have neglected to include water proofing of toppers in their classrooms!

I don't think it is a "Canadian" thing.

Best feature of the Tilley hat is the double front/rear strap system - will stay on your head in 20-30 mph wind no problem regardless of direction.

If you prefer $$$ just buy a $10 'Boonie' hat from your local Army surplus store.

Tilley is made from fairly heavy fabric - can get a bit much on hottest days. I dip mine in the drink often to keep cool and wash sweat out.

Besides the SPF I find that full brim hats block much more glare and make my fishing vision better - I also use side shields on my polarized sunglasses. Look like a dork but see the fish fine.

Tilley

I have a tilley and had them since 1996 bought one hat in 96 in New Brunswick and the first one had a small rip and was replaced for free in 2000 at a store in Quebec without a proof of purchase. I still have that one its in good condition.

They have a great waranty

I got one of these waxed hats I bought downunder in New Zealand. They callem Kiwis, go figure. Love the hat when it's cool and raining - its totally waterproof. Just make sure the collar of your rain jacket fits under the brim or you will have all the water trickling down your neck. every couple of years you need to "re-wax" with wax spray (the same stuff they use for the barbour jackets), available at orvis. it it's hot, definitively NOT the hat to wear. Looking like a dork is what fishing is all about!

Imagine, if you will, a 170 pound well-endowed female, in a fishing vest with all pockets loaded, wearing the world's ugliest green colored hip waders and an oversized "fishing camo" tie-dyed henley shirt. Reading glasses strapped around her neck, and sunglasses on her face. It just doesn't get any better than that!

I just bought a felt hat from a local leather shop..what do I spray or apply to it to waterproof it? If I do not, what will happen? Will the color change, its brown with leather straps to hold it on.
