The Neversink

Got on The Neversink this afternoon....just a beautiful river. I wasn't in The gorge, instead below on Oakland Valley. The water was cool and gin clear...but The Neversink is always cool...tons of bugs in the water....flying ants bright green nymph of some sort....not a fish rising!!! Saw a bunch of skittish ones....skunked! I wish I could have stayed for sundown, but the drive home called. Next time!

Normally it is, but this had been a good August for cold water in the Catskills. At Bridgeville the high temps were only 60F at the end of August but this hot spell brought the low to about 62F in the AM and 67F max. Normally the area gets too warm for trout around mid June, but generally the temperatures have been good for trout all August in the Neversink. July was a touch warm, but August was great and as soon as this heat wave abates it should be good again.

FYI, here is the temp gauge info for the Neversink at Bridgeville (right under Rte 17 crossing).

USGS Current Conditions for USGS 01436690 NEVERSINK RIVER AT BRIDGEVILLE NY

i heard there waz a bigfoot down in the gorge who breaks fly rods!! proceed with caution!!

Oakland Valley is about 10 miles or so down river from Bridgeville.I would say on the conservative side you've got add at least 5 degrees to the average temps from Bridgeville.

This dates here are Bridgeville from 6/15 - today.

I would say that a vast majority of those days the water temps down there at Oakland valley were at 70 degrees and above from 6/15 - 7/31

In August from mid 60's to 70 ish. Most likely many of the fish on the lower Neversink either where caught and eaten, or moved up river to cooler water.

Nice area just not the trout zone for Summer fishing on the Neversink. This was a very very fluke year with LOWER THAN AVERAGE ambient temps which resulted in much cooler water temps especially on the Freestones up here.

Fishing the Beaverkill in July and August is usually not possible but was this summer.

I would disagree, the water probably leaves the gorge at least the same temperature, if not cooler because of all of the springs and small tributaries that have influence on the river down there. You were definitely ok fishing below the gorge. Don't worry about the negativity. Have at it. It's actually really good down there and there are some surprisingly large holdover and wild trout far quite a ways below the unique area.

Got his guy right below the Gorge. Plenty of em in there. Just gotta play in the riffles near some sort of structure. Be it natural or man made.

Big wild brown that put up an awesome fight.

This was when I was just really starting to fly fish and I brought it home and had a nice dinner. If I can remember correctly it was early summer or late spring

I fished the Neversink about 6 miles below the gage yesterday and the temps tracked the temps at the gage very closely. One data point though. Air was cool, but water was low and it was sunny.
