Trout Fever

i was thinking about throwing some streamers come spring to try to catch some of those delaware rainbows and browns i was wondering if there is a specific pattern and size?
and how do you fish them?> cast them out and strip them back?

Go to BRK TRT's profile and look up THREADS started.

You will be a while, lots to look at there.

Oh.. eat dinner first before you do that. Like grocery shopping, never do it on an empty stomach. Otherwise you won't get past the first grilled cheese sandwich.

lol 500 threads wouldnt it be easy to just tell me the secret? lol

im guessing fishing streamers is another chapter to fly fishing... nymphing, drys, streamers, wet flies, drys with a dropper.. all differnt techniques
maybe i should just learn nymphing and drys for now...

I just thought you could look through his threads and get an idea of
the water fished, rod used, that way you can ask him what technique
and streamers work where, when, and how.

Also by my records he has only 315 threads started, 58 more than me.

New to flyfishing?
Oversimplification, but if you were a spinfisher or a plug caster, use your past experience.... fish streamers like you used to fish lures/plugs.

ak thats a good point but how can anyone have more threads than you with your 6400 post.... ill have to shoot brk trt a pm and ask some specifics..

i got a question how is stream fishing fly fishing? when in all reality its same as sending a rapala out there and stripping it back

I like to fish two streamers at a time while fishing the delaware. Very short leaders that are usually less then three feet long. Basically a butt section tied to ten to twelve pound maxima. The reason I like the heavy tippet is because I feel I can get a better action on the streamer.

Some times the fish are on the bank mostly when the surf is up. They also hang at the grassy knolls of islands as well as in the broken water. The technique I like to use is the Jerk Strip using 200 GR. sinking line. This is a technique that was mastered by Kelly Galloup who used to Guide in Michigan, but now has a lodge in Montana Called the Slide in.

You are basically provoking a territorial or instinctual reaction from a trout. Kindda like a cat chasing after a ball of yarn.

Here are some of the ones that I run:

I believe Madona might have been developed by Ray Schmitt and was originally a steel head fly but works well for browns also Kelly G. later modified the pattern and came up with the twin tail madona. Hands down my favorite patter right now is the Boogie man.. followed by Mr. Rad..

Don't ask me why, but I have had an immense amount of luck with #12 rainbow smelt streamers.......

Nice flies theartoflee! Are those Zoo Cougars and Madonnas articulated?

I fish almost the same set-up as Artoflee except I use a leader about 6-7 feet long.

My best pattern last year was an articulated T & A rainbow. Ken Tutalo's baby brown pattern is also good. Almost all my streamers are 3-5" long. The trout have no problems eating a fly that size!

Some folks might like the West Branch at 700 cfs with sipping trout but I get just as excited for 3500 cfs. Big water=big streamers=big trout!

Don't forget the Boogieman!!!!:nose-picking:

Anybody have a pattern or link to a pattern for the T/A fly?

Thanks!

Does the T&A fly have something to do w/ fish porn I keep hearing about?
:)

I posted the a photo of the T/A bow under my patterns above. It was one that I tied for a swap and a Dh photo'd it. The last photo is one of the bow in a browns mouth was one that Cabarle took.. their is a pretty funny story behind that photo.

The T/A was originally tied as a bunker pattern then a baby bow pattern. There are a few variations of this fly one of which is the swimming Jimmy.

Gadfly The Zoo cougars are actually refereed to as Heifer Groomer when tied articulated. The ones below that are zuddlers not madonas. When I tied my T/A I use extra large eyes because the doll eyes rattle I also use a bigger hook for the trailer a size two Gamma egg hook with the barb pinched. The key to the T/A bow is very soft pink marabou more so than in the flyfisherman link. I also tie a brown and alewife version of this fly.

Kelly Galloup has DVD's on tying and also fishing his streamer creations. They are worth every penny if streamers are your game.

Pick up Streamer Fly Tying and Fishing by Joseph D. Bates, Stackpole books 1950. I scored a first edition (600 copies printed) from Amizon for $15.

The only problem is keeping yourself in quality streamer hackle.

These are all classic streamers that still work. I do fish modern streamers as well, ref. theartoflee- everything he said & posted.

Remember, big fish need a big meal

ArtofLee-

How's the Stacked Blonde work for you?

Been eying that pattern as one to add to the arsenal.

Thanks.

The stacked blond is a real trooper. There is only one exception to when I have taken her for a swim and she hasnt produced a fish. The one time I didnt catch a fish on it was because the fish took the fly and didnt give it back.

However with that said I only fish this fly in specific situations such as when I want a fly that is fast in the water like flash gordon, and gets down like Leroy brown. I once fished the stacked blond on the Beaverkill when it was over 1,200 CFS. I drove around looking for a gravel bar that wasnt submerged. When I found a gravel bar I broke the blond out cast her upstream and mended the crap out of the line.. after a few strips fish on!

Streamer fishing on the Delaware system can be fantastic if you catch a good day. If Cannonsville has been overflowing Alewifes will be dumped in. Big white streamers will be the ticket. Strip them erratically. I think many of the patterns here will work well. I'm partial to white however.

You can fish them on a simple, short, 4 to 5 ft heavy leader.

Don't count on catching Rainbows... for some reason they tend not to eat streamers that often up there.

For a real treat I suggest you hook up with a buddy and fish from a drift boat which hands down is the best way to fish streamers up there due to the size of the water. Call the Delaware River Club and ask to go out with Bruce Miller. He's one heck of a guide, a hell of a nice guy, and a master at streamer fishing in the system. It's his specialty. Tell'em NJFred sent you.

Bruce is the one who got me into streamer fishing about 5 years ago. I never would have used streamers had I not gone out with him.

Hard not to love streamer fishing with Bruce. He's so good at it! On a good day with the right conditions it's hands down the most productive way to fish the Delaware (from a boat through). What's also nice about it, you don't need to be a casting master to have a good day. If you can learn to through a 20 to 30 ft line... that's all it takes.

Streamer fishing is my favorite way to fish the Delaware. Tying those big flies is fun too. I have to agree about the rainbows not showing interest in streamers. I don't think I have caught a single one on a streamer.

NJfred....That's one beautiful bow in your avatar! Where is that from?

"lol 500 threads wouldnt it be easy to just tell me the secret? lol"

Wouldn't it be more fun to figure it out on your own rather than have all the secrets given to you on a silver platter? The Internet makes it too easy to get info relative to FF. I guess I'm still old school and think getting a book and reading it to glean out the points that are salient to your needs is still the best way to learn about any sport. I'd bet that the Internet is likely the biggest contributor to making the rivers more crowded.

I've seen a lot of casts in my years of fly fishing.... and i must admit I have caught some pretty nice fish on some pretty lousy looking casts..... but somehow it all worked out...... BUT, THE CAST ON THE COVER OF "a RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT" is something i have never seen nor do I ever want to see..... exactly what the hell is that?
