St. Croix Legend Ultra Question

I was recently the fortunate recipient of a gift fly rod from a friend that can no longer fish. It is a 9' 6 wt. Saint Croix Legend Ultra. It is a beautiful rod, but a little faster than what I usually fish with. Before I received this rod I was in the market for a bass rod maybe a 7 or 8 wt. If I put a 7 wt. line on this rod will it handle it, and will it have the backbone for a good size bass. Any opinions before Christmas :) would be appreciated.

If you can exchange it, I'd go for a 7- or eight-weight depending on the size of the bass. Over lining will slow the rod down and make it easier to load - something I never do - but when it comes to fighting large bass you'll still have a 6-weight rod.

BTW, when I first got my St. Croix, I felt is was too stiff and didn't like it, but after using it for a while I was surprised by how easily it loaded.

I believe the new St. Croix. technology works.

Also, for bass fishing I like a stiff rod to help me set the hook. That's my two cents.

A 6wt should be fine. I use mostly the same streamers that I use for trout and I get away with throwing a 5wt. I would look into a heavier 6wt line that has a heavier wt forward. I believe orvis has the wonderline that you get in half sizes. I use the orvis wonderline that was said to be between a 5wt line and a 6wt line for my 5wt. It casts great in windy conditions and is able to turn over large nymphs at one time.

Also, the rod you have is made by my favorite company. I have a 4 wt legend ultra and has never given me any trouble with breaking and also casts beautifully. I feel that should handle most of your bassing outings. Good luck and Enjoy!

I've been eyeing one of those in a six for some time... thought it would be a nice smallie/trout streamer rod. glad everyone is so high on it.
