spooked a huge one

willowhead

~Jedi Dryfly~
I spooked a huge trout today. Was out exersizing my dogs (4) down by where the brook (Stewart) runs into the river (Willowemoc) on my property today, and all of a sudden, a huge trout spookes and turns around and heads for the river. It was probly about 30 ft. up stream (from the mouth) in the brook, and restin' right behind a rock, in water maybe a foot or so deep. Boy it was really spooked too; turned around and headed for deeper water (in the river) like a bullet. Cool thing is........i think it's right there in the little eddie at the mouth, where very often there's a fish (or two, he he he) year around. It looked like a big brown of at least 18 inches. Why it was in the brook facing up stream, as if it was headed even further up is beyond me. Maybe tomorrow, i'll get a couple temp. readings from bouff the brook and the river, to see the diff. In the summer it's always a radical diff. You can just use your hand and it's like goin' from a bathtub to a well. With one foot in the brook and the other in the river, i can just reach from side to side and feel a huge diff. But this time of year the only thing i can think of is the fact that it might have been in the brook for food reasons. I've been workin' on/in the brook a LOT lately, and there's a tremendous amout of bug life under the rocks in the brook. Now, i know it's time for the rainbows to be up in the brook, and they are.......but this was a brown, big brown. Lately i have seen a few minows in a slow part of the brook where it hits the mouth also. Maybe that big brown was just minow huntin'. (??) mark......

hunting

Spose there's always the possibility that it may have been nosin' around for a loose egg or two.......who knows? mark.........
