Round 3 Fishing Report

MACFLY

Too many streams too little time
Got out again yesterday with BHC. Despite the crazy weather its the 3rd time out in April which is pretty good for me:)

The weather was overcast (what a shock). We hit the water around 2:30 or so. Bugs in the air were caddis, olives, and Hendricksons (yes Hendricksons). Not nearly enough to get the water boiling but certainly some selective risers to target. I got to use my Z axis for the first time..All I can say is Holy Helgrammites this rod unreal. It makes a crappy caster like me able to throw a half way decent amount of line:). In any event about 15 minutes into the fishing Al hooked up with a nice rainbow in a very cool little run (see picture). We moved down stream and started chucking buggers as the weather got a bit surly and the skies opened up to drench us for about 20 minutes. Thankfully it was a warm day so the rain felt good.

No luck on Buggers (surprised by that). Al took another fish on the CDC Caddis in some flat water below a nice deep pool. We moved down to the next hole which was a nice deep slot. i had a nice rainbow on briefly before it got loose. Starting to wonder what was going on as the fish were not cooperating. We headed back up to our original spot and Al saw another fish rising. Being the good sport that he is he gave me first crack at him and I was able to close the deal. This rainbow was not big but put on quite a show leaping 3 or 4 times before coming to the net.

Ok skunk off. Al wandered downstream and I let the spot settle. I took another rainbow below the branch you can see in the picture jutting out. This is more like it so after drying the fly off I cast again and of course hang the fly on the branch. The fly was stuck and hanging about 18 inches above the water blowing back and forth. Al came back and we both thought the same thing. I wonder if a fish will come and try to eat that fly. Sure enough as I was getting a new fly on I looked up to see a fish splash back into the water. The fly was gone and there was a trout on the bottom just wondering why his jaw was aching:)

Had one more take but quickly got off and we decided to call it a day. Birds were working a shallow run above us picking off flies left and right. All in all a good day considering. The picture is where we took all but one of the fish for the day. I will hit this one again in a few weeks for sure:) Here is hoping the fish gods grant us fair weather for May.

well I had a different experience yesterday. i arrived at a stream that i usually fish when everything else is high. And low and behold I get there and there are cars, kids, people everywhere. What is going on? less than a miniute later the stocking truck shows up with his caravan of helpers. i left and tried some spots but if i went up steam there were people fishing for the fresh fish that was just stocked. If I go down stream there are those waiting for the truck. I finally found a spot with nobody there. i got on the stream and the truck followers see a parked truck and figure this must be the place they put them in. Next thing I knew I had company throwing a bobber rig 20 ft to my left, three others throwing on each side of me. I left and had the same experience in another spot. i was the only person with a fly rod, i had on my Simms wader and vest. I got looks like as if I was an arab in line to buy an airline ticket.

Nothing says America like split shot, Stren monofilament, and Power Bait. I get misty just thinking about it:)

There were some folks around spinning yesterday but not too many. Then again the stream wasnt getting stocked

you forgot to mention the rubber wal-mart hip boots. Other than mine, there was not a pair of Gore-Tex waders to be found

Last weekend I fished my honey hole and had a couple of spinners come down. They were polite and went way up river from me, so it was nice to have a little respect. Earlier a guy showed up while I was rigging up and said he only had like 20 minutes so only spinning for him. He invited me to fish the hole with him though, showed me where they were biting.

So far polite experiences for me this season.

Sadly dude this will change

Fished the gorge last friday and had a couple of spinning rodders set up about 20 yards from me. No big deal I didn't care. After they saw me land my 3rd fish from the run they wer standing in my front and back pockets. I got out and walked around them to were they were originally set up and landed 4 more. This is just one of the reasons I don't like fishing the gorge anymore. At 930 the place started to get crowded so I headed over to pa were I had the river to myself and the trout were up and eating caddis and tiny (24) olives. I don't even know why I bother to buy my NJ license anymore.

Have to admit Paul that trout jumping out of the water and grabbing the fly you got hung up was pretty cool. Was a great time on the water as always ,just wish there had been a few more fish looking up.It won't be long though and they will be popping everywhere .Here are a few pictures I took of the day.:)

Did not mean to throw the thread off topic. I started fishing using a spinning rod and I am sure that is true with most of us. I was nice to see the kids excited about the fish and start them off in the sport. I just had one of those days that the water was high everywhere else around here and everyone converged on that stream, and with the stocking truck that added the cherry on the sundae.
