Planing an Alaska float trip on the kanektok River

Did this trip about 10 years ago and used Papa Bears too. We did it in Sept and spread it over 10 days. I can honestly say that it was the best trip of my life. There were 3 of us unguided. The top half of the river was loaded with silvers, dollies, grayling. You could literally catch 200 silvers a day til you gave up. I would mainly start off on a pod by mousing before going down to get them. The 2nd half or lower river where you will start to encounter some native and lodge traffic is where all the big leopard bows were. The river was filled with log jams and under every log jam were giant bows gorging on the dead salmon that hung up on the root balls. Bring lots of flesh flies. We didnt see another angler or group until we got to the 50 mile or so mark except a boat load of natives going carabou hunting, They couldnt fit another person in the boat. They would pull ashore, one would get out and climb a hill and glass for the herd then come down and off they would go. They came back a couple days later with carabou hanging off that boat, I have no idea how it floated.
This is the trip to end them all. I would recommend doing it yourself so you could do the entire river and I know you can do it in 8 days but I would think about 10, problem with that is bringing fresh food. Youll have to plan that out pretty well. IM me if you want any more info. And pick an alternative river in case that is either blown out or too dry. I want to get back there.

I contacted popa bears yesterday and they are calling me tomorrow to go over everything. JC is hooking me up with a friend he has out there also. When I get a better idea of what exactly where gonna be doing I will definitely message you, THNX AGAIN!
 
You should have a blast!!! I'm headed up to Cooper Landing mid September for the monster leopards and steelhead. Cant wait!!!!

When we were there, ALL you need is white, brown, white/brown (rust) colored flesh flies. THATS IT. And they fucking HAMMERED them. Leave the fancy shit at home.

Flesh flies as Brachy & Simms already mentioned, leeches, beads and glo-bugs for dollies and also for the bows. I haven't fished it yet (also a trip I would like to do one of these years) but I don't believe the Kanektok gets a lot of sockeyes, more so chums, silvers, and kings so larger bead sizes in 8-10mm will be better to match their eggs. Definitely bring some mouse patterns to catch rainbows on top. Small dries for grayling. For silvers, usually bright colored flies in pink and chartreuse, there are times when darker colors in black and purple will work better though. Not that the pattern is critical but this fly works very well on silvers, I would tie some in chartreuse/green, pink/purple, and black/purple. Contrasting colors are key in pacific salmon flies, and the rubber legs really seem to piss off the fish as well. Be sure to bring some pink wogs to catch silvers on top too. Alaskaflyfishinggoods.com has a lot of good info, some really good bead assortments based on the region you are fishing, and any type of fly you could possibly imagine for fishing there.
