Alagnak River Fishing Trip

tkhour

Just finished a River Runs Through it!
Just got back last week from my first fishing trip to the Alagnak River in Alaska. I went from sept 3rd till the 9th with AK Rainbow adventures for a week float trip for wild rainbows. Trip started out with 3 flights (Newark to Seattle- Seattle to Anchorage- then Anchorage to King Salmon. When we arrived in King Salmon all I can say is that it is a culture shock. 500 people in all of the town with 10 to 1 guy to girl ratio. So some local said. We stayed at the King Ko inn which is 250 a night for a dump of a room. Went with two of my buddies and we all shared the room. Went to the local supermarket and prices were ridiculous. We spent 100 bucks on two cases of beer. Bud Light and MGD. WOW. How do people live up there. Anyway, the next morning we were on our way to meet the guide and owner of the lodge at the mouth of the Nonvianuk river. The Alagnak is formed by both the Nonvianuk river and the Kukaklek. We had 8 people in our party, my two buddies, 1 guy from Canada, two friends(1 from CO and 1 from MT) and the two guides. One of which is the owner of the lodge.

In summary of the trip here is what it entailed. We took pontoons down the river with all the gear and food and each day set up camp at our resting spot. We covered 40 miles or so of river in a week with 4 camp sites. Each day we would set up tents and the guides would make dinner. Lunch was served on the river usually and breakfast was served everymorning when we woke at 8am or so. Fishing was done two ways. Floating from the boat and dead drifting or wading around in the hundreds of spots we encountered. The Braids section of the river has more water to fish then you can imagine. It would take you a month to fish all the fishable water in that section alone. The river for the most part throughtout the trip was high. Higher than typical or this time of year which made it tougher to find fish. We did very well though. Each day we caught between 10-15 rainbows between 14inches and 19inches. The biggest fish measuerd 23 or so. We were very pleased to say the least, but the owner said we had from their standards a slow trip. We also had the pleasure of catching Silvers, Grayling and Chum salmon which was a bonus. Thank God the fishing was good because the weather was lousy. Rain everyday, with one day being real windy. We had rain gear and dry bags for our stuff but it was miserable setting up camp and taking it down everyday in the rain. Stuff did not dry out for us if it did get wet because it was so damp each day. Food was very good for example bacon and eggs in the morning to steaks at night. Beer and cigars were staple everyday. Brought cubans with me and handed some out everyday to the other guests. The patterns that worked best were flesh flies, egg sucking leeches and beads. Technique that worked all trip was dead drifting all patterns. Some guys used indicator to help. We caught some fish swinging flies as well, some on popsicles and articulated leeches. The fish for the most part are strong fighters. I would argue however that a 15inch Delaware rainbow would out match a 19 inch Alagnak rainbow any day of the week. The accomodations and staff were solid and I would highly encourage anyone that wants a true Alaska experience to do a float trip. The advantage was that we did not have to fly into the river everyday to fish it. We fished from sunrise till sunset everyday with great water right in front of the campsite. The one downside is the shower situation. They do not provide a shower on the trip. Wet ones and changing my clothes everyday had to make due until I got back from the river into King Salmon. That by the way was one of the best showers of my life. I attached a bunch of photos for your enjoyment. Have lots more but dont want to over do it. Contact me if your interested in going next year. I will be booking a trip with them again for a combo trip Moraine Creek/Alagnak. Its a 10 day float for under $4500.00. It will be in late Aug. Enjoy the fish porn

Hi Tom,

Sounds like a real roughing it trip! "They do not provide a shower on the trip." No shower for seven days even if it is cool out is pretty tough to endure.

Beautiful rainbows though and they all looked to be in good shape. No dry fly action? Maybe next year you can get into a creek where they throw deer hair mice to those big rainbows.

Wow great looking trip. A friend of mine just got back from the Alagnak a few weeks ago. I heard there were a ton of salmon in the river which lessened the quality of the trout fishing. He said a few years back he went in late June and the trout fishing was phenomenal and there was a great deal of dry fly fishing.

Glad you had a good time, nice pics. Interesting idea about the 15" Delaware rainbow vs. a 19" Alagnak rainbow, I'll take your word for it.

TK,

Thanks for the report. Sounds and looks as if you guys had a great time.

Keep a spot open for me in 2015. Kids should be out of college by then.

Nice to be there with a mix of trout and salmon. Those are some nice looking hoes.

Did you fish the beeds on the hook or up the line an inch or two? Like out west, it's becoming popular on the SR.

Cdog,
We typically used a tandem rig with the first fly being a leech or flesh fly. 18inches below off the barb we tied a 7mm pink/peach bead with a hook 2 inches below. Dead drifting this rig was deadly. The rainbows this time of year are feeding on two things in the river. Flesh from dead sockeye, silver, pinks and kings as well as eggs. Tried some dry fly patterns with no luck.

Wbranch,
We tried mice patterns to see if we could raise up some rainbows but with the high water it was difficult. No luck with either drys or mice. Had fun doing it though.

Sounds very much you experienced what they claim on the license plates, Alaska, The Last Frontier.

You do not seem to be the type to place a plastic bead above a bare hook. Say it ain't so.

Glad you had an enjoyable trip.

AK,

Before the winter's over you will own a fly box full of assorted colors and sizes of plastic beeds.

i loved the moraine and its tributary, funnel creek. imagine sight fishing for those same rainbows you caught in the alag! can't beat it!

Akskim,
I typically would not use a rig like that to flyfish. It was a choice of, do I want to catch fish or not. I did not come prepared to fish with beads. Guides and fellow guests helped us out with providing that. Needed to adapt to situation, especially when your paying big money. Those rainbows are not feeding on bugs. I appreciate your comment however :)

Oh where is rford when you need him....

For those of you not acquainted rford... Ralph is the champion for the use of beads in fly fishing while in Alaska. In other words, what Corndog is to Centre Pinning, Ralph is to bead fishing.

Before all is said and done, I shall convert those two heathens of their evil ways.

I stayed in King Salmon a few years back. In fact, I got black out drunk in that bar you took a picture in. Damn sun would not go down in July, and I had nothing to gauge when to quit drinking by. After the umpteenth round of Alaskan Duck Farts ordered by my guide (a local NJ gal), I time traveled to the next morning, wasted in a bush plane headed to the upper reaches of the alagnak. Great trip. Naknek was fun too. As was the Brooks river. I was there tail end of kings height of the sockeye. Sockeye made trout fishing touch a few days as they would push everything to the edges, but man did those fish hammer flesh flies, not to mention the brown bears hammering the sockeye. They'd rip their heads off like a person using their teeth to open a candy bar. Pretty awesome.

If any of you guys are up for a trip out there, you should definitely look up Patrica Edel. She's from Pennington, and was a student of Mark Dettmar's. She's got a b&b out there now. Great guide. Best looking woman for prolly 500 miles. Hahaha. Its an added bonus when not only is your guide remarkably knowledgeable, helpful and energetic, but she's also easy on the eyes. Highly recommend her. PM me if you want her website. I'd post it, but I don't know if I'm allowed.
