Pequannock River

Has anyone ever fish this river? im looking to check out the wild trout section if anyone can help out at all that be great.

Park by smoke rise on 23 and head up stream. You can alos get a permit from Newark and fish in the watershed. At least I think that's the Pequannock. I have fished upstream of the lower smoke rise entrance. It's a bit featureless and the road is noisy but there's fish.

And wear an orange hat or you may get hit with an empty road soda getting launched from my truck.

Your better off fishing the trout conservation downstream of the 23 bridge. More water and more fish. It gets skinny up there. You also might get towed out of smoke rise, especially if you park on Rail Road property.

Park under the rt. 23 bridge just immediately south of High Crest Drive which is a hard right turn as you come over the bridge heading north on 23. If heading north, pass HC Drive and get in your fast lane then make your first legal U-turn less than a half mile north. Loop back on rt. 23 south and just before the bridge over the river, bear right and drive under the bridge and you'll find room for a few cars to park off the road there. Fish up or downstream - that was the former TCA which was moved due to a lack of parking. I grew up in High Crest Lake and walked or rode my bike to this river with my fly rod in a tube back in the day. Tons of wild browns. Wading is like walking on greased bowling balls, so be safe. In the "good old days" the police used to let cars simply park along the highway on the south side and fish, but those days are long over. Generant, the business upstream of the bridge, allows fishing but not parking. All good water through that area.

You can park under 23 here and fish up and down stream. Pretty sure it's the spot Rusty is talking about.

Need GPS to anywhere else? People love it when you post GPS coordinates.

Pretty close. Exact spot is:

41* 00'41.78 N
74*22'15.20W

Park directly under the rt. 23 overpass. :)

a tanker went off the hgway there..big fuel spill..killed everything there..the musky is a much better choice

plus under the hgway u could get jacked by thugs..there always there..and they will steal ur car

Yea, I had a run in with those hooligans last Summer. They shook me down for my liquid fly floatant, they thought it contained alcohol.
On a serious note, what the hell turned the water a milky white early last Summer, something from the water treatment plant upstream?

The milky white water is most likely the result of the bottom release Newark has been providing to meet the permit requirement of 5 cfs below the Macopin dam. Notice that the color change coincides with the drop in water temperature during the Summer. It's off-color, but it's cold, and the trout don't seem to mind.

Be careful parking under the bridge. I've had a few run-in's there with homeless and miscreants. I haven't had decent luck on the river, even though I drive down and up 23 everyday(not like that makes it a per-requiste). I usually prefered down by the bus depot, and north to the bridge; but I suck at trout fishing.

If you guys ever wanna meet up I'm down.

Let me know if you get the same PMs I got about spot burning after your post :):)

Yet another thread where the pathological fucking know-it-alls have to slay us with their knowledge of all things trout in NJ. Thank you very little! :thumb::thumb::thumb:

nazi thought police want to squash this info. The more people interested fishing the river, the better for the river. It is no secret either. Maybe real fishermen on htis stream will discourage the netters.

Don't get me wrong, there are streams where spot burning can have a negative influence, but sending a fly angler to a recently former TCA site is certainly not spot burning. And I agree with you, tompg, that the Pequannock could use more friends. Fighting Newark for better flows is a good thing for that fishery. Also, while this is no longer a TCA, this stretch is a listed WTS. Hard to spot burn listed waters with special regulations that have online maps showing you where to access it. Sorry if you disagree, Trout Nazi.

Oh no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

John

Ease up with your humor... The little stream you fish would be destroyed if it were posted here, correct?

You know there is actually a group advocating for this river, and guess what, it ain't TU (who hasnt done shit for it).

I think the inconsistent flows and with that inconsistent fishing on the Pequannock protects it from excessive pressure simply because people get frustrated with the place. The fish hang in there, but its a aggravating stream to fish at times. When its good you think its one of the best streams in the state. When its low, you feel like a stream with great potential is being totally neglected.

Not completely correct. Ancient history. I'd be happy to bring you up to speed if you'd like. TU started that initiative. I'll leave it at that. Like I said, ancient history. BTW, can you list the accomplishments the past 15 or more years of that organization you didn't name? I support them, for what it's worth...

As for "not doing $hit for it", also incorrect. Our local chapter is working with the town and DEP who allowed a bad contractor to channelize a portion of the current TCA to remove trees but who screwed up some habitat. The other group you mentioned didn't want to rock the boat because they like that town that owns that water. Right is right and the town's contractor didn't do the right thing. TU reached out to the other group and decided that if they didn't want to get involved, we would. No harm, no foul. We'll fix it.

I know about Ross and the PRC.

I wish him and the PRC well. That river deserves and needs protection. It's not easy fighting city hall! Newark could care less about the river once it leaves their drinking water reservoirs. That's a crime, same one we see NY City guilty of on the upper D.

fished parts of the pequannock the other day on my way to wayne. not thoroughly, but still no luck. most of it is posted by city of newark with little access for oak ridge resovoir to high mountian rd.

You're fishing the upper river between the 2 resovoirs where you need a daily permit from the Newark watershed. The lower Pequannock is all puplic water its entire lenght.
