Paulins kill river

Im up at my parent camp just south of Newton and was looking for new waters to fish. I heard of the Paulins Kill and was wondering if anyone has fished it before and done well? From what I read it seems that its hard to find access at some point. Anyone possibly have any locations to access the river, not looking for your honey hole.

had a bunch of stuff typed up and lost it. to summarize.

you can catch multiple species throughout the day. eel, catfish, carp, suckers, rainbow and brown trout, small mouth bass, sunfish, perch, even large mouth bass above it in columbia lake.

subsurface- no less than 4x, 3x is better if you have it. i've had carp of 40+lbs on at that spot below the falls and it tried to run me to the delaware. it seems that strippers also sneak into there at night and feed, seems they cruise back to the delaware in the daytime, could be my imagination, but i've done some catfishing at night and experienced strikes no other species would make.

yea, if you fish dry flies, bring the usual and a lot of attractor patterns. large gaudy stuff will get you 40 buns an hour, so watch out for that. also, basic streamers and crayfish patterns will hammer the smallies. any questions, let me know.

ps, you can access it on the left of columbia lake from the 46 turn off, or if you continue up, you can access the other side.

There are plenty of access points down from Newton to Blairstown. I used to live in Hardwick and fished it frequently. Some of the roads of off 521 will lead to plenty of bridges that have parking and access to the river. I you have a gps just follow the roads to the river.
Great fishing and I hardly ever ran into other fishermen. It seems to be busier below the dam in blairstown.

The previous post was talking about the dam at Clumbia lake. I fshed it last week and landed a 4lb brown on a spoon, I was searching for Strippers, also had a couple shad. I hooked into a carp (I think) it took off like a freight train and finally broke off, bastard took my spoon!!

Hope that helps.

Drive the extra 15-20mins and head to the flatbrook..Once you fish the BFB, youll never fish tahat silt bucket again...

100% Agree with Simms -- The Flatty is the PREMIER Trout Stream in the State of NJ -- Only thing about me fishing the Flatbrook is if Im going to go there it's just closer for me to go to the Bushkill in PA -- The Bushkill is IMOVHO an even better stream than the Flatbrook and it's 30 miles closer to my house.

Dan,

Still to this day I can't believe how many trout the state stocks in the bushkill..Its UNREAL!!!!

yes it is Simms -- That stream is AWESOME to fish -- I also know a Place on the Bushkill where you can catch NATIVE Brookies and Browns all day long -- No one fishes it because its a 3 mile hike up a mountain then down again -- it is very pristine and just a beautiful place to go -- I have caught upwards to 100 fish a day (All Native) on Dries -- (NO BULLSHIT EITHER) All those fish are usully between 6 - 10 inches and the colors are extremely vibrant -- Love that stream

Peace
Dan

I would rather catch 6'' natives all day LONG then the stocked jersey keepers anyday...

I hear ya on that one Simms -- I would too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not all that enthralled with the FlatBrook, it is merely okay.

I would rather fish the south branch of the raritan, or even the musconetcong mainly because I do not believe the fishing at the Flatbrook is worth the drive, when I'm local to the others.

I've fished it before, and liked it, but if I'm making a trip for that, I agree- Bushkill in Pa, The Willow in NJ, the Ausable in NY, the west branch of the delaware, the little J in pa

I'll be fishing the flatbrook pretty soon, maybe through more fishing experiences it will grow on me. Call me ignorant.

Well I did find a spot to fish just South of the PaulinsKill lake and was very disapointed in the kind of river it was. even though I did get a couple nice browns it wasnt my cup of tea. I wouldnt fish it again. I have fished the Flatbrook and its nice but was just looking for something else. Thanks for all the input though.

You're spoiled!!! You fished/fish the Ausable! HAHA! Probably one of my favorite rivers of ALLLL time!
Rivals the scenery ANYWHERE!! ANYWEHRE!!!!

BUT, I realize the crowds at the BFB can permanently deter an angler from visting again...Hell, the FFO stretch has more dudes on it than the bait section!! (mostly the 'transitional, license pinned on the baseball cap, trigger fly reel' type)... I will reccomend a spot that gets very little pressure...Take a gander up the the school of conservation...Walk from there down to the bridge at Lake O....I can gaurentee only a half dozen of people fish that stretch each YEAR, (me and my dad included)...THe water is great, they DO stock it, and NO PRESSURE....Beautiful scenery too... THEN, go below Lake o and walk that stretch all the way down to 206...That is a hefty walk, but again, ABSOLUTELY NOBODY, WHATSOEVER!!!! Great water, lots of fish, (esp since the constant elevated flows have spread them out) and best of all, no other fisherman... Give it a shot...

The first 30 yards below the dam are good, then it turns into 'ribit' water...

Simms, I appreciate it. You hit the nail on the head with my problems and the Big Flatbrook. I don't mind the drive, but because I'm not terribly familiar with the area I get pretty put off by major crowds after a long morning drive.

It is absolutely beautiful, and I'll be going back in the next week. I'll give that spot a shot. Cheers.

Another stretch that is right in the HEART of the crowds that sees LITTLE pressure suprisgnly is the stretch BELOW shaeffers bridge down to Warners Hole...AWESOME WATER...most people fly down to warners or hit the two major pools above the bridge..NO one really gives attention to the 1/3 miles stretch below Shaeffers...

:thumb::thumb::thumb: So true!

There are SOME PEOPLE on here that have absolutly a very poor sence of humour.

Next thing we will find them making fun of people who jump from bridges
(without any water close by you know), or how they like to warm up their
little kitty-cat in the family micro wave, or how they spend an enjoyable
summer evening in the back yard looking at the blue light zapper, and
keep count of the zaps.

Course we all like a bright and long zapper every once and a while,
but it is still in poor taste to keep count.

However, I do believe in doing the right thing.

LMFAO Now thats Funny

This is a serious problem, I see nothing funny about it.

Bears will gather in packs and hunt for humans, now they are targeting fly fishermen.

Hikers are one thing, now that they are searching us out, and it is a problem.

That is why I believe that women and children when mountain biking should be required
to hang a steak from their handle bars to draw them away from us.

I agree wholeheartedly. The other day I saw fresh bear scat and it had a slightly chewed Ross reel in it!

BTW, I'm wondering why all the searching for strippers in the lower Paulinskill. There isn't a nudie bar within miles of that area!

I knew I took a wrong turn!! Darnet! Darnet!! Darnet!!

I've fished the flatbrook quite a few times, and personally I like the Pkill alot, atleast where I fish. I go through stillwater, and out toward White Lake, then back in the woods. It'smostly stone bottom, and its got an awesome section of stream for trout, and some nice smallmouths. The best of all, unlike the flatbrook, I hardly see a set of tracks from people. I'm not downing the flatbrook, I've seen some very beautifulsections, and I like fishing it. However, the section of Pkill I fish, I have quite the luck, and it has a rare beauty for that river. ;)

Those are the areas I fishe. Not like the rest of the river, very rocky, good runs, nice pools, and plenty of pocket water. I hardly ever see any one else.
