Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

Opinion on guide...

Do you really need a guide? Fished up there for years always got into fish never had a guide.

If you intend on fishing the fly zones where the fish are usually packed in like cord wood, you definately don't need a guide. However, fishing on the other sections of the river has been slow and a drift boat trip with a guide will almost certainly put you into some fish. Most of the guides drift down the river with their clients fishing egg sacks under floats in front of the boat. They cover miles of river very effectively. Fly fishing guides are usually able to position their boats in a manner to increase their client's effectiveness which is a real advantage in higher water. They're also pretty good at knowing the best holding areas at different water levels. I guess a lot depends on your preferred fishing method, how high the water is and how badly you want to catch fish.

I generally don't use guides up there, but did a guided float from Pineville to the ballfields in Pulaski. It was a great way to learn the river that has helped me spread out to more places. We mostly fished flies, but did a little egg sack fishing when things were slow as well.

I would say using a guide now and again is a great way to learn. Just be sure to make your expectations known to the guide.
