NJ Fall Stocking

Pete

Trout Hunter
The NJ Division of Fish & Wildlife, has published the fall trout stocking schedule for 2007.

The Schedule: NJDEP Division of Fish & Wildlife - Fall 2007 Trout Stocking Schedule
The Hype: NJDEP Division of Fish & Wildlife - Fall Trout Fishing in New Jersey

It looks like they're planning on stocking, fewer but larger fish, like they did in 2006. Mostly 2 year-olds with a sprinkling of a few larger fish.

You don't have to "follow the trucks". My recollection of the Ramapo in the autumn of 2006, is that the first week-end was a bit of a disappointment, (even to the bait guys). After that, trout were being caught on just about any fall or mild winter day.

Dennis,

I have video of the spring stocking I would like to post but I can not find your post with the instructions for the in-line player posting. Help?
In the meantime here is the link Episode 2

What is meant by the "Lower Big Flatbrook", and is the State planning to stay away from the upper fall spawning areas (brooks and browns)?

I believe the term lower Big Flat refers to the 206 bridge all the way down to Flatbrookville. However, I say this only from experience. In the fall the river's usually to low to stock above 206. I've found many broodstock fish the last few October stockings in this area but none above the 206 bridge.

NJ Fall Stocking Update

Received this e-mail from F&W today:

The NJ DEP Division of Fish and Wildlife's popular Fall Trout Stocking Program begins today, Tuesday, October 2, with streams in the northern and central portion of the state being stocked. By the end of next week 20,000 brook, brown, and rainbow trout averaging 14 to 16 inches, and weighing 1½ - 2 pounds, will have been distributed in 16 streams and 16 lakes and ponds statewide.

Due to low water flows, some changes in stocking are anticipated. As of today, changes are planned for the Black River which will not be stocked; the Lamington River will be stocked instead. Also, the South Branch of the Raritan River will only be stocked downstream of the Rt. 513/Rt. 517 bridge in Long Valley.

For more information on the fall stocking, as well as the stocking schedule and any other changes, visit on the division's Web site. NJDEP Division of Fish & Wildlife - Fall Trout Fishing in New Jersey

I forgot about the fall stocking. I was thinking about going fo a hike this weekend but now I think I will have to hit up a river.:)

Can't believe they're going forward with it considering the water levels, but I guess all should be fine. One question though-which of the major streams has been probably affected the most by the droudt? I realize it's just opinion but what do you all think?

I think we were in the same boat last year. A day or so after they stocked the dangerously low Ramapo, it was raging due to a major rain event.

Pete,

Saw this little disclaimer at the bottom of the schedule.

Week 1 (October 1 – 5)
Although the prolonged spell of dry weather has resulted in unusually low stream flows, during Week 1 most of the streams slated for stocking will be stocked with their full allocation of trout. Some individual stocking locations may receive fewer (or no) trout than usual if existing conditions are unsuitable (shallow water present or pools absent) at the time of stocking.

What shape is the Ramapo in, I haven't seen it in a while? Do you expect the fish to be spread out over the usual locations or just dumped in the location with the deepest water (which would probably the bridge leading to Bear Swamp Brook).

I live in Monroe and have never fished the Ramapo but if they have stocked it with fish this would be the perfect opportunity to due a little fishin close to home. Anyone with info on if it's been stocked, and where are some good access points. I take the train to the city everday so I usually stare out window and I have seen what look like to be a couple good spots to fish, but any help would be appreciated. Also, what flies should I be using on this river.

The Ramapo, at the Mahwah guage, is currently hovering just above, and below, 40 CFS (about 2.45 ft deep). I'd expect downstream locations to be a little higher.

That's low, but not drought conditions. Normal for this time of year would be about 50-60 CFS. USGS Real-Time Water Data for USGS 01387500 Ramapo River near Mahwah NJ

I don't see any reason for them to change from their normal stocking locations.

I haven't checked, but normally EJTU helps spread them out by assisting with some "float stocking". Low water may limit where they can navigate their boats.

MIke,

The best way to send me something like this is via PM. I don't always check all of the threads right away and this is the first time I'm actually seeing this request.

I'll look into your request to enable bliptv.

Dennis

The Ramapo will be stocked on Friday Oct 5th. All this info is readily available on the NJ Fish and Wildlife website. I float stocked one of the rivers on Tuesday and I can assure you the fish are large and healthy. Often takes several days for the new stockies to get acclimated and even look at a fly, however that is not the case with bait.

EJTU spreads the fish out when they help the state stock the Ramapo using both float and bucket techniques. I don't know if they're helping this time around.

The State justs dumps the fish at convenient spots.

Don't worry, it'll be fished out by Monday.....

It's a real shame that the Black River won't get any fish. I understand the reasoning for not stocking, i.e. unfavorable conditions, but it still kills me. Not only is the Black one of the only places around where you don't see guys in every nook and crany, but it's also one of the most beautiful. Pray for rain and some upcurrent swimming from the Lamington.:crap:

I went to the Ramapo RIver at Glen Gray to 'spot' trout in the low, very low river. The trout could easy be seen because the water is ankle deep in 95 percent (est) of the river. I didn't fish because of the very high temperature. As a Catch and release fly fisher, I think the stress would be too great.

Others were fishing and it was tempting. I watched as a youngster caught a nice small mouth bass near the parking area hole.

We need some rain without question. I contemplated going to the Esopus in New york but the reservoir was releasing water at 700+ fps. Maybe next time.

Tight lines!
