New Guy lookin for help

Hows it going. I have been fishin for about 15 years but this is my first year with a fly rod. I have been out about 4 times so far (South Branch in Neshanic and Long valley) and have caught many good size trout so far of my own flies. I am just lookin for someone to help me hone my skills. I think I pretty much have down the basic over hand cast and roll cast. I am just lookin for someone to tell me when to cast up and across, or down and across. It gets mighty confusing lookin through all of the forums cause it seems everyone does it diff. If anyone feels like fishin with a newbe let me know. I like to travel to diff. spots (NJ, NY) so i really don't care where to meet up with people. Thanks a million.

I'm going to the catskills on Saturday to fish the Beaverkill. If you're interested, let me know. The only problem is that I leave from home kind of early and I won't return until late. We can drive up together or meet up there or you can meet me somewhere and follow me this way if you get bored or tired, you can leave.

This is an offer I am going to have to take up with you. The problem is I have a business trip this Friday till Saturday late night. I am trying to get out of it and I will post tomorrow on here if I do or not. If I can't I would treally like to go up the next time you do. Thanks

No problem. From now till November, NY will be my weekend destination! Whenever you're ready!

Rob, come on up to vermont & fish the battenkill, hoosic or walloomsac..I fish just about every night and early a.m. & late p.m. on the week-ends...water is high & muddy right now but in 1-2 wks it should be normal...gor (4) nice browns on opening day in the green river..don't ask what I was using!!

I will be in Burlington, VT the first week in May on a business trip. Would you be kind enough to suggest a place or two to do some fly fishing?

Thanks

Joe

Rob,I always cast upstream to get a better and longer drift, now don't forget you'll be aiming for a lie and need to cast far enough to get the fly down to the fish. Here's what i do.

I cast upstream and take in the slack line as the fly(indicator) comes downstream. When it is a bit above me i mend up streamto get the longer drift and then wiggle my rod tip a bit to get slack line out to go farther downstream.

And then the other thing i do is cast upstream(Reach Cast)and then mend in the direction i would like right away, this cast doesn't need as much mending because you already did it from the start but you will have to mend sometime during your drift.I catch alot of fish with these cast and find it quite effective for me.

I forgot about the (S Cast) which gives you a lond drag free drift for Nymphs and Dries.Try it out, start false casting and when your ready to cast during the shoot simply wiggle your rod tip back and forth and then the line will make s's on the water.Take slack in as it comes downstream and then when it gets right above you mend upstream.

Hey i live in Neshanic Station and see you fish around here so if you want i can meet you on the Stream if you'd like and show you.

Joe, Burlington is on the other end of the state from where I live/fish..However, I have fished east of Burling on the winooski near Duxbury and north/east of Burlington the Lamoile near Hyde Park..May 1st is kind of earlier for any kind of descent fishing but at leat you will be fishing...Try calling Schirmer's Fly shop @ 802-863-6105 or Classic Outfitters @ 802-860-7375 to get the latest river info...let me know how you do...

Stomp, when will you be fishing?Saturday i plan on going up to the Catskills and experience the passion up there but it also depends on the weather.Friday and Saturday i'll be free so let me know when it's good for you.

Nympher, Looks like Sunday I'll be up on the river in neshanic, I'll let you know where. DJ, the Millstone is one of my home rivers. OK fishin, go towards Black Mills Road, mostly below it. Don't think it is stocked, but no one really fish's it. I have pulled 18-20 inchers out of it when I was younger when I use to spin cast.

I grew up practically across the street from the millstone sports shop and used to fish the millstone river every day. Havn't fished there this year yet, but will eventually.

Thanks for the info. I emailed Ed Schirmer and Classic Outfitters. Ed answered my email; Classic did not. Ed runs a nice little shop in his basement. Seems to have everything one would need. Very congenial and helpful. He referred me to a few places but stated that I was a few weeks too early.
