Musky Report

BIGBOW

Wilderness Fanatic
Well, with Sunday and Monday dedicated to beer and bbq's, my only oppurtunity to hit some water was Saturday. Not very promising with the weather and the wind reports. My plan all week was to hit the SB, but levels were still too high so we gave the Musky a go. Fished the TCA (levels were perfect) and the small gorge blocked much of the wind. Not a lot going on bug-wise. Saw some sulphurs and march brown spinners and casted to the few rising fish I saw around dusk. No luck nymphing, but got a handful of small browns on sulphur spinners and rustys. Id imagine the hatches were better Sunday and Monday.

I was guiding that evening a mile or so upstream of you and saw pretty much the same, but the fish were looking up late to the handful of sulphurs, both Dorotheas and Invarias, that were hatching. I understand Sunday's hatch was strong in that area although I didn't get out myself. Have no idea about yesterday as I fished for a brief time on the SBR instead.

I fished The Musky both Sunday and Monday......Sunday, at a bridge in Hampton..strong caddis(many kinds), sulphur and Light Cahill hatch, saw a couple Iso's, oviposting caddis and cahills, as well as sulphurs ......Monday, I was under the graphite mill bridge casting upstream to rising fish...HOLY LIGHT CAHILLS....not the easiest spot to fish, but I was with an old Vietnam vet who wanted to fish, so I obliged him the spot he wanted....I caught the oddest looking brown trout......about 9 inched and and shaped like a spawning sockeye...football like...If anyone is interested I have a picture,,,,

Post it, I'm interested. Standing in the muck fishing to those risers? Been there, done that. We really need to notch those two side-by-side dams!

There you go Rusty....If you walk across the top of the dam, and wade up stream a bit, you don't have to stand in the muck, just use a side arm cast, because your back cast goes under the bridge...easy pickins:)

Hows the access along 627? Its been a while since I fished down that way, as Im usually in the Stephens Park to the TCA area. Last time I was down river I fished close to Alba Vineyard, but Ive been reading theres not a lot of access on that stretch due to private property. Thanks for any input on the area. I remember it being very scenic. Feel free to pm, but Im really not looking for any secret spots or anything.

Between Asbury and Bloomsbury is where almost all private club water exists although there are a few spots you can get access to on state lands. Below Bloomsbury is nearly all open all the way to the Delaware River except the Smith farm (which is below 5 Maples and the Hughesville dam) which is now a private club stretch leased by the Musky Trout Fishing Club who lost much of their leased water just below Asbury to a local, wealthy landowner. This landowner is forming a high-end, very exclusive club of his own associated with Hawk Point Golf Course. The lower river is virtually unfished by fly anglers and the bait gang is by now mostly all gone. It gets wild fish in from the Delaware as well as wild browns and state stocked trout and holdovers. I guess it is too far from most population centers to gain more interest, but you'll be shocked at how many PA license plates you'll see down that way...
