Here is a blog site that I created for Montana fishing reports. I hope nobody thinks of this as an advertisement, being that I am not promoting anything. Just thought it could be helpful to those that are planning a visit out west. Any recommendations are appreciated.

Nah... you're cool. Just 1 thing, keep a few of those reports for us over here, I always enjoy reading them.

Hi, Skipper, Just looked at your video about Montana and was impressed with it. I'm going out to Montana the 1st. 2 weks in Sept. A friend of mine has a camper on the banks of the Gallitin so I will be fishing mostly that river. This is my 1 st. time out. What flies will be hatching at that time??? I guess we will go to other places also like the Yellowstone He has been going out there for years and years.. My e-email is whv1937@comcast.net Thanks ahead of time for the info Vance

Sept. can go either way. This year the terrestrial fishing was still in full blow, while other years it was not existent. The Gallatin is not a very finicky system. You can catch fish on close to anything that looks edible. If its hot go with an ant or beetle. Cold go with a baetis. Nymph wise...big #4-6 stonefly patterns with a smaller BH off the back. If you want something more accurate PM me in 8 months

If you want a more accurate report, shoot me a PM

Can you refer a good outfitter in the Twin Bridges area? :) Just kidding.

Skipper, I have a question for you (and perhaps I asked you this before so forgive me if I'm repeating myself here.) I noticed you have a quote from Adam Frey for your post signature. Is that the same Adam Frey I knew, the outstanding wrestler out of Blair Academy, who unfortunately recently passed away in the midst of a courageous battle with cancer?

Yes. Adam Frey was a good friend and teammate of mine. Sure was an inspiring kid.

I wrestled for Easton ('91.) I always remained involved with the program. The "final four" is this weekend, I most likely saw you compete there for Blair. I think many fans that remember him competing in that event are hoping the NHSCA will see fit to name an award in honor of Adam.

new report up

Thanks Skip.

I really like the part about exactly what fly pattern and size you use.

One thing though...

I had to go all the way to the first post to get to the link.

So PLEASEEEeeeeee... next time could you add the link to each post.

I have a question about the winter fishing out there. Is it more common to see folks fishing now throughout Montana in the winter and if so do you have a guess or perhaps someone who has been there for some time might know when the winter fishing started to happen in earnest. Thanks

.

Most of the people I know in MT are guides/anglers and I know that most of their fishing is done in the winter since they are guiding in the summer/fall. Since most rivers out here besides the stone and a few more are tailwaters, winter fishing is accessible all winter long. Today on the lower I saw about 5 other anglers and one other boat and this was a 4 mile stretch. The pressure is way down now, but over the summer id say 80% of the people on the river are from out of state. Now that its winter, its almost all natives. So to answer your question, it is common to see people on the river, but nobody is guiding that I know of so it seems like much less pressure. From what I have experienced, winter fishing has been the best season yet. I am not sure how to answer the second part of your question, sorry.

Thanks I was really curious to know if this was a recent trend or if it has been happening for a long time. I didnt consider all the tailwaters you have out there so that makes a lot of sense. Clearly with all the folks that brave the salmon river all winter it can be much different out west. Just never really heard much about the winter fishing until recently. I remember last winter seeing pictures of folks fishing on the upper D and thinking that was kind of odd but again it is a tailwater.

I fished the Gallatin by the Big Ski ski resort after morning of sking. I was quite good I landed a buch of rainbows nothing big and one nice 15 inch brown.

It was a warm day though close to 45 degress. You had to be careful with the ice on the banks.

I did see some other fly fisherman on the river.

Yeah you do see some guys on the gallatin this time of year, which might be my favorite stream aside from some undisclosed creeks, but the gallatin tends to ice up pretty good in the winter. Guessing no one is coming out anytime soon, but if you do decide to fish the gallatin, make sure to check weather.com every morning for ice jams since they tend to create flash floods upon breaking.

If your lookin to come out for a specific hatch this year, check out the above link. Hopper season is also the busiest on the river, and fish get wary of flies. If your lookin to hit the hopper hatch hit it late july, early august. Any time after mid aug. the trout figure it out and fishing comes tougher on top.

Fishing has been out of control the past few weeks. Streamer season is finally here. Ill try to get some pics up soon.

Skipper whats the prognosis for this year. Did you get enough snow or is too light?

Too early to say, but Ill be honest. Not lookin great for water so far this year. But last year was pretty similar being we got most of the snow in April and early may. Snow pack right now is about 75-80 percent of average. Pray for snow. We got 18 inches today and supposed to get another foot or so in the next few days. If we do not get any more snow I would not come out between august through September.

Skip.....Can you post the recipe for the home invader streamer you mentioned?

Thanks

I mix it up quite a bit with color, and different flashes, but here is a pretty generic recipe that we tie in the shop. Also you can tie it articulated with some marabou and flash on the stinger hook.

Hook: Tiemco 700 #1/0-8
Thread: White Flat waxed Nylon, White UTC140 for smaller sizes
Eyes/weight: Lead wire, painted dumbell eyes
Body: White Marabou, White Fox Tail
Flash: Silver Flashabou, UV Herring Back Krystal Flash, Black Flashabou
Sides: Badger Rooster Neck Hackles
Cement: Zap a Gap.
