Mayfly's entry.........

~Jedi Dryfly~
Well our own "Mayfly" has a Fly Of The Week entry over on FAOL's home page. Pretty interesting fly guys. Allan, can you tell me though, what the advantage is of having a fly with the hackle underneath the shank of the hook? Is it about the "leges" or floatability, or what? Thankx, mark.....................p.s. by the way, i have been collecting a few prizes for the "Gathering" contest. How are you doing on that front? later..........m.j.r.

Mark,

Thanks for the interest in that fly but dam*, didn't you read what I wrote? LOL.
I said that I haven't actually tried that style in a fishing situation and asked that anyone who ties it and uses it should let me know. Personally, I plan to use a few during the Gathering and see if the trout care for it, or not. As far as any advantages of having the parachute under the shank, again I'm not sure. Theoretically, the body of the fly should sit higher and maybe the legs will give a more realistic imprint? I really don't know. Even if the style proves to be good, I don't think the trout will tell me why they hit it but it will be satisfying nonetheless.

Now, as far as items for the Gathering, I'll have some flies for 'door prizes' or for contest winners. I'm sure I'll have some other 'stuff' too. Maybe everyone coming should be asked to donate something?

I'll leave that up to you.

Later,

Allan

good deal

Now that you remind me, i did read that, yes. LOL. Well, we'll see won't we? Maybe you could put a little notice up on the FAOL board about folks bringing a few flies or something??????? I'll do it here at NEFF. I've got flies, a print, and a book, and some leader/tippet stuff so far. There's still time to collect up some more "stuff" too, lol. I read your post/artical about it (The Gathering) over on faol, under Fish-In's. Spose LF wouldn't let you put it up if you didn't call it a Fish-In? Either way it doesn't matter. Next year, i'm going to the next level anyway. It won't be limited to just the 4 web-site/clubs. I'm opening it up to ANYONE who wants to come. And i may just have two solid days of tying at the Rockland House in the back dinning room to start off with in 2005. That would be on the Fri. and Sat. of the "Roscoe Gathering", from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., tables to be arranged in the same fashion as they will be used later that eve. for the resturant. That way, the turn around wouldn't take but a half hour, or so. BET!, Tommy is up for it. I'll run the thing myself, if the CFTG isn't down. I'm going to get feedback from all the guys who show up this year as to wheather they will participate next year as a tyer. Hell i don't need "Names", they will come later on. I'll start out in 2005 with anyone who wants to tye. I'm doin' it Bro., wiff or wiffout. he he he mark..........

Well, it's "Official" now Allan. I expect to see YOUR name on my list SOON! As soon as i can get my hands on a 2005 calendar, i'll be posting the dates for the 2005 "Roscoe Gathering." I'm going to be having a two day tying "Event" also. From 10:00 a.m. til 4:00 p.m. two three hour shifts. Tyers can tye from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and or from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. all day, or half day, one day or both days. As my schedual fills up, i'll cut it off when full. Simple. So, just let me know what YOUR down for, lol. This will be an annual "Event." This type of schedualling will leave plenty of time for early morning fishing and or eve. fishing. A tyer can fish before and or after tying and still participate in the tying portion of the "Roscoe Gathering." So, lets get the word out NOW! mark.........

Mark and Allan,

This fly pattern "style" with the hackle underneath and tied on a swimming nymph type hook for mayfly imitations has been tyed by Paul Weamer for at least 6 years that I know of. If you were wondering how effective they are, you might want to ask him, although I can tell you they are quite effective.

Hi bj,

I know Paul and we've spoken about the style. Really, there's nothing new in fly tying techniques except perhaps honing some down a little and the applications of a wide variety of new stuff. Todays numerous media outlets allow for wide exposure of anything someone may wish to describe. I applaud Paul for what he's done to define, develop and get this style as well as develop a specific hook shape into the public marketplace.

However, I read about this style more then 20 years ago. Although I don't recall ever actually fishing it, I've tied it off and on during the span of those years. I don't recall the hook I originally used and again, Paul has done some excellent work in figuring out and designing a hook that apparently allows for better hooking. If you like you can read a few references about the style that I posted on another site. One is from 1982 and the other from 1987.

Allan

Thankx Bruce for reminding me of that. I've actually sat right next to Paul and watched him tye that fly. He did a program for us (CFTG) once at the Rockland House here in Roscoe. He's a hell of a good fly tyer. Like Allan, my thoughs are that it has to have something to do with the silowette formed by having the hackle underneath, that makes the fly so effective. Your thoughts Bruce? mark.........

Paul spent a whole lot of time getting the proportions (wing size and placement, body, tail, and hackle placement and size) so that the fly lands perfect EVERY time, and they do. Floating down the river, they look like the real thing, and the fish think so too!!!!
(probably ought to ask Paul about the "hackle underneath" part, but in order to float the fly and not disturb the rest of it, there isn't another "good" place to put the hackle except underneath.

Bruce

Mark,

I'm pretty sure that the flies Paul demonstrated at the meeting were upside down flies and not the fly now being marketed by Truform.

Willow:

2005!!!!!!!!!!! I just want to get through 2004 first. I have to many fish to catch and not enough time. Not to mention a lot of flies to tye. I know you are ambitious , but this is way to soon. I guess for the planning stages for the host it's never soon enough. For me, all I can think about is taking a few trout on a Brookie Fin.
