Main Stem Report

tkhour

Just finished a River Runs Through it!
Got a chance to fish with fellow member Rich aka. BabyBlue on the Main Stem yesterday. Shehawken was a zoo with multiple boats launching. Lot's of spin guys with canoes. Spoke to a few of the canoe guys on our way down and they reported catching a rainbow and a brown. Killed all of them which pissed me off.:finger: Oh well what can I do. Couple drift boats as well. During the morning we saw a tremendous caddis hatch but nothing on them. Water temps were between 50-53 all day long. Saw a sporatic hendricksons around 2pm but not enough to interest fish. We decided to chuck streamers and hit the banks for the most part and Rich was rewarded with this beauty. He also moved several large browns throughout the day. All in all a great day to be on the river - good company and good times. Can't wait to go back up in two weeks for a three day float. Good fishing!!!

For some reason I was under the impression that you had eyes. Oh well, live and learn. I'm curious how you hit a nail on the head?

Nice fish Rich! Can't wait to head up for my first day trip next week. I also have a 4 day WB trip from May 6-9. Hendricksons in the teeth all afternoon and rusty spinners all evening:)

Good job guys what did he take? Wish I was there...

Kelly's stacked blonde in olive. We were fishing a tandem rig with the other fly being a black conrad sculpin. A couple of the other fish we moved went after the black sculpin. It's nice to have choices for the fish.

FishOn,
Checked out your blog. Good stuff. Thanks for the reports. See you on the river real soon.

FYI
Lordville temps hit almost 70 degrees today. Can't believe it. With air temps going to 90 degrees tomorrow I dont even want to think about what its going to do to the fish. Feels like July. We need water. Hopefully things will cool off with the weather breaking on Wed. Pray for rain and cool weather.

Anyway,

Got out with BabyBlue (Rich) for another float on Sunday. With no water on the West and East we figured we would hit the Main Stem. Got up there at around 8am and Coz offered some helpful advice on what was going on over the weekend. We knew the one bug competition would be on so it was a matter of trying to avoid all the boats. Decided to do Buck to Long Eddy. Got on the water at 8:45am and it was snowing with caddis with a few hendricksons in the mix. Decided to nymph a little while until things started to happen. Got my first rainbow on a size 16 prince in a riffle.Landed the fish in the net to take a pic and what do you know it falls out of my hand. Good news though, the fish still has the hook in its mouth. Pick it up again and guess what, falls out again and this time does not have the hook in its mouth. Bye bye. I was pissed but what can you do. Beautiful main stem rainbow between 16-17inches and fat. Water temps hit 64 degrees. For the rest of the day we had sporadic rises with a few targets. Rich had a few targets later in the day and after 30min or so of casting to a pod of fish he hooks a fish which turns out to be a chub. Was tough to see what the fish were taking with so much food in the water. It was ridiculous. Spent wing caddis, hendricksons and millions of caddis schucks. We were both pissed but thats the Delaware. Had to get off the water by 7pm which is when things really started happening with fish rising as we made our way back. Sucks but thats what you get for floating on a Sunday with a 2hr ride home. Only saw a few boats all day with one boat being the most interesting. Some guy had a canoe with a jet motor off the back. He would go up and down the river from lordville to dark eddy. Interesting. All in all it was great times with great company. Going up friday morning to do a three day float. Good fishing.

Sounds like you have a friend for life there. We did the same float on Saturday. Had I posted a report, it would have been identicle (even with the guy in the canoe with the motor). I caught 1 brown in Long Eddy and 1 chub which was not brought to the net. On the way back to Buck to pick up the car, the water was boiling with rising fish. I hate that float... It's just too long for me to do then have to bring the boat back to the WBA then drive home.

The highlight of my day was when the anchor got stuck and I undressed to to my underwear. I jumped in figuring I was going to swim under and dislodge the anchor. The water speed and temp said otherwise. I reached down as far as I could while in the water and cut the rope.

Wow. I don't blame you for cutting the rope. Did you have a spare anchor on the boat?

No spare anchor. Whenever I saw someone on the bank, I asked if they had any anchors. Of course we would have paid them for it... One person held up this metal from the railroad. It actually had holes in it which fit perfectly on the spare carabeaner I keep with me. I went up onto the tracks and found another one. Both of these together had to weigh at least 25-30lbs which was perfect. The only upsetting thing was that we left the only pool of rising trout we saw all day.

Without his trusty tool box, DC would still be a drift.

Some people use a chain for an anchor their theory is it gets caught less likely. The chain is rolled up in a ball then is attached to the anchor line you might want to try this some itme.

Typical 3/8 inch chain weighs roughly 1.44 lb/ft.

30 pounds would require some where in the neighbourhood of 43 feet.

A chain loop of 18 inches (managable size) would be about 14 coils.

Thats a lotta chain....

Thats a lotta chain....but the real question is how long would rock snot live on chain links???

Actually, you really only need enough chain to wrap around your float buddy. Right CD?

Dennis tried to use me as an anchor, but thankfully I was able to fight him off as he tried to get the rope around my ankle. But I spent the rest of the float lookin' over my shoulder. Jeez, what a guy won't do for rising fish.

The good news is I think we can go back and dive for that anchor - it's bath water now! Lordville's COOKING ALREADY and it's only April!

Or you could have filled OMC's purse with rocks...She could have just put her nail polish in her vest:)

Jess,

I like your way of thinking. But, pound for pound, duct tape is stronger than chain.

The hardest part is getting a float buddy to swallow enough rocks to sink to the bottom. Not that I have any experience at that.
