Log jam II

I fished a WTS. I went new way in the stream and found this log jam. I came up on it from down stream. Cast up into the fast water that flowed into the jam. Instantly hooked into a good fish. Shot into the logs and got off. I then waited and stood very still for half an hour and tried again. Nothing. I then looked down into the deep water (4ft at most) behind the logs and saw 15 or so good sized brown trout holding to the bottom. I tried drifting all sorts of nymphs at them, and tried drifted down and under the logs from the other side. Nothing. I saw a snapping turtle the size of a garbage can swim through and the fish scattered. The stream I was fishing is tiny so these were true monster fish for this trickle. I need help.

Bad underwater shot but these were the small size of the group.

Didn't SSA have a method he uses to sneak a fly in under big rocks without getting hung up? May be an option to try from upstream, although if the fish are on the back side it would seem impossible to land the fish without being broken off.

He did. I tried that. No luck and tangled and hung up under a few times. I got a few good slow drifts past them and nothing. They looked like they were eating something almost microscopic along the bottom. They were fat fish so they have a food source in there.

Ollie...I'm curious.......Next time you are there, try throwing an ant or a beetle...or some terrestrial that would live on those branches, on to the branches...then gently make it plop on the water.............maybe a fish will take...

If not, get the M-80's:)

They were deep and not looking up. Maybe they were eating scuds? I might try again next week if I can get some 7x tippet and think of some new patterns to try.
