Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

Fish first, ask questions later.
I have been reading this board for about a year now and decided to try my first post. This is my second year fly-fishing.

Went to the Gorge yesterday. Saw some midges flying around and a few black stoneflies climbing on the snow banks. Tried beaded hare's ears nymphs, olive scuds and rainbow warriors. I finally caught this brown on a McCheese sucker spawn (with a rainbow warrior trailing).

Question: Are egg fly patterns lesser flies? Should I be embarrassed using them?

Nice fish ! Welcome to the site johnk111 looking forward to more of your reports! Wouldn't be worried about using egg patterns if they are working for you why not.:) Won't be long till the snow is gone there today perhaps.

Only you can make the decision about what flies you fish - as long as it is legal. Some fish only dries, some fish only flies made of natural materials (in an odd switch a vegan buddy of mine only uses flies made of synthetics - no animals killed to make his flies) some like using classic old flies. Some even revel in "junk flies", often with a jab at the purists among us. Fish with what you are comfortable with and don't worry about the rants of many of the fly fishing community.

Wait a second, not to take this post off into left field (thats Beetles job), but how can you be a vegan and fish? Thats like being a war loving pacifist.

That's a damn nice picture.

This is a post that all can learn from.

Nice Fish!

I was in the same area on the 23rd I think. I didn't get anything, but that's no surprise. I'm just starting out.

IMOVHO if it isn't "MEAT" and the "FLY" is tied from fur or synthetic materials using thread, then, it is a fly and it is fly fishing --- Trout will very quickly spit a the fly because they are expecting a very soft meal that has taste and some blood. The flies we tie are very unnatural to the fish , and the fish get startled when the unexpected happens. HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU MISSED THE FISH BECAUSE YOU ONLY GET 1 SHOT OR HIT ON A FLY?? We as fly fisherman could catck way more fish with a Salmon Egg or Garden Hackle (Worm) than we could fishing flies early in the season, but we still fish the flies. I dont know about anyone else, but there is no better feeling to me than catching one of the smartest fish (TROUT) using what these fish eat and survive on every minute of every day. To fool a Trout with an imatation fly in their natural enviroment, for that fish to accept your fly over the millions of other flies in the water that they can see is (if you really think about it) unfathomable.

I can recall one day fishing the Lackawaxen below Lake Wallenpaupack in a little town called Rowlands, it was around 5 or 6 pm and thousands of Caddis (Henryvilles) were hatching --- To give you an idea of how many Thousands mean --- I couldn't distinguish my fly on the water becase there were so many around it it was hidden by the rest. I saw a fish take a fly in the vicinity of mine and I would try to set the hook only to find out it took the one next to mine. Needless to say it was very frustrating and humbling --- The only way I caught any fish was when my fly was taken the fish hooked themselves. In all the years I've been fly fishing I had never seen anything like that hatch on that particular day --- And I have never again experienced it since. The point I'm trying to make is this --- For a Trout to take your less than perfect imatation fly over a REAL NATURE MADE PERFECT LIVING INSECT is really beating the odds and it is one of the best feelings you can achieve as a fisherman.

Peace
Dan

I don't know if I agree with that, I would have to think that other fish are far more intelligent, because they are often found in schools.......

I know exactly where you were fishing in PA. I have fished there many times.
There used to be a little fly shop there, is it still in business?

Your talking About Charlie Brite's Store --- last I heard Charlie past away a few years ago -- The Building is still there but I really dont know if the fly shop is still in business -- I wasn't fishing by the store -- I was maybe 2-3 miles up stream from ther but the general area is correct

Peace
