How much hackle?

jack1266

Just finished a River Runs Through it!
I could use a little help here. I've been attempting to tie some Catskill style drys and I'm having trouble with the hackle. My flies never seem to look like there is enough on there. I've been going with about 8 wraps. Is this enough? Do I need to use two hackles to get a fuller wing? I am using Collins' hackle. The flies float, but they could be better. Also, where on the cape do I find the spade feathers for tail material? Thanks

Jack

with that cape you should use two. if you go to a higher quality hoffmans..more barbs-longer feathers, you can get two flies from 1 feather.

Hi Jack,

8 wraps seems to be more than enough and if the fly still looks sparse it is definitely the hackle you are using. I know the collins hackles are inexpensive but if you have to use 2 on each fly, the savings is diminished. Now this is not a plug for Hoffman/Hebert hackles but by using 1 hackle with 3/4 turn behind the wing and 2/3 in front of the wing you have enough hackle to make make the fly float or even fly away. Seeing how you live in Bergen County, the price of the Hoffamn necks shouldn't scare you

Living in Bergen county limits me from buying expensive rods, reels, and hackle. Soon I won't be able to afford gas either.
