So I'm tying the fourth fly of the night and I start having trouble seeing what I'm doing. I keep adjusting the lamp, but it doesn't seem like the lighting is the issue; my eyes are having trouble focusing. It takes me a few minutes to put it together but then it occurs to me--I'm tripping on head cement. Eventually this grows into pretty heavy visuals and a constant swirling in my periphery. It went away after about ten minutes of fresh air, but it was pretty intense for about five minutes. I've taken enough psychedelics to know that these were VERY tangible visuals combined with light-headedness.

Has this happened to anyone else? As far as I can tell, brain cells are spread pretty thin in these parts so I'm guessing the answer is yes.

On another note, I got a disposable back today...I miss the look of film. And don't give me shit about the treatment of that king 'cause I ate the bitch.

I never had that happen, though it's obvious that it easily could. I do know several people who have got stoned off head cement, but i don't think it was an accident.

There are easier ways to get high......Nice pictures is right emoussa....what state were you in?!!.......... You can take that two ways....:acid:

Looks like we found CMM's long lost twin brother..........

Are you concerned, or just bragging?

If you're concerned, don't use head cement.
Make a smaller than normal head, and build it up with whip finishes.
If one unravels, trim the loose end, and the fly is as good as new.

The trout won't notice.

The brookie is from maine, everything else is NY--Willowemoc, Esopus, and SR for the king.

and Pete I'm definitely not bragging. I just thought it was bizarre and probably not that uncommon...good convo piece...

Maybe the fumes from the head cement, combined with the mirex and dioxin now a permanent part of your system from the king salmon you ate, joined forces to produce a "new" kind of high? :hubbahubba:

Explains why the yokels fishing up there have a combined IQ of 5.

Taking off from Rusty Spinner's post about a meth lab, maybe there is a TV series here. Think about it - "Rising Bad". Well meaning guide living in a trailer on the Upper West Branch starts a tying school for local kids - who begin to crave sitting down at a vice. Develops a new blend of "fly dope" that dries quicker, allowing faster production, with some odd side effects. Kids seem to care more about tying than fishing...I already know some people like this! A rough crowd from the more urban Hancock, NY area decides to muscle in...our hero fights back with a gatling gun mounted on his drift boat....copy right applied for.

I think CMM will be the Jessie Pinkman of that relationship. And Moosekid is seeing things due to the neurological damage from eating salmon with that much mercury in it.

Pretty much -- Only CMM is Badger and I'm seeing things swirl around on my dope-ass tv, BETCH!

You have to be high if you're eating anything that comes from NY waters.

Really??? That was from my first trip to the Salmon River so I guess I was just a little stoked on bringing something home. I also took that out of the Douglaston so I felt like I had paid for the fish, in a way...But seriously though, if I eat 6-7 meals of fish taken from cold NY systems, and about 16-17 meals at los pollos hermanos over the course of a calendar year, am I retaining enough mercury to mess me up??

Just stay away from the blue stuff at Los Pollos Hermanos and you'll be fine.

Not sure how much mercury is in that salmon, but about 10 years ago a mercury thermometer was broken in a science classroom in the school where I teach. A disgruntled employee dropped a dime on the school, and a hazmat unit came in, cordoned off the area and destroyed quite a few cabinets and shelves as they supposedly decontaminated the room.

Contrast that with my experience being a student in the mid 70's where the chemistry teacher would pour a vial of mercury out on our desks and we'd roll the silver metal around with our bare hands. Might have lost a few IQ points doing that!

Only if you find yourself posting on some random internet fly fishing forum and are missing your left testicle.

Or are about to be...

Oh wow, that's me! I only have the right one. Okay yeah, so too much Mercury for me. Noted. Luckily Mercury is in retrograde right now....

Sounds like you have the makings for a vision quest. Your tipi setup and a bottle of head cement.

It sounds to me like you are too lazy to cap the head cement after each use. The only thing that does is make the cement thick. Head cement that thickens sucks and will not penetrate the thread as well as a thinner consistency. You should cap it between flys, I have read some of your posts, trust me you do not need to be killing anymore brain cells.

Don't use glue....It is fly tying.....not fly gluing. ..:)

If the eye of the hook is already a little crowded with thread by the time i'm tying my whip finish, i generally coat the thread and do the whip finish with only 2 turns. I'm also very far from being decent at tying flies, but I did have the know-how to screw the cap on between flies...

If you're crowding the eye, you're making something too big.
For instance, when the hook shank is relatively empty, there's a tendency to make the body too long....

Unless you're tying something special that requires different proportions, keep the body down to 1/3 of the hook shank...Similarly, the hackle/wing area should be limited to another 1/3... On simple flies, this leaves plenty of room to finish a head without crowding.
