Heading to Glacier National Park Montana

Anyone been to Glacier National Park in Montana? Heading there late August. Hoping to get into some good fish. Any recommendations?

I don't know how you plan to get there, but for my money, the best fishing in that area is to the south in Missoula. I fished in Galcier years ago, and what I remember is that the fish are not that big (cut throats) due to the cold water/insect situation. But the hiking and photography opportunities make Glacier one of my favorite national parks.

I have been to Glacier National Park and agree with the previous poster. The fish are small and relatively few and far between. The problem is that the water is glacial - extremely cold and carries little in the way of food sources.

If you can head down toward Missoula or out to the Missouri River I would do that - you will be far happier with the results. Troy and Libby, MT are also options - the Kootenai river runs through there.

The scenery and hiking in Glacier are spectacular. You won't be sorry you went.

Glaciier Nat. Park is great fishing...from a belly boat. Really, most of the fishing is lake fishing, so do yourself a favor and stop at the High Plains Drifter. It is owned by a Black Foot Indian, who can give you great information if you just ask. BTW, buy flies from him, as he will have what you need along with permits and good infor.

I have always enjoyed fishing the park as well as the ponds on the reservation.

Have a ball.

I was there last August and it was great. I would highly recommend you drive to fish the South Fork of the Flathead in the Bob Marshall Wilderness Area. It is a 2 hour drive down a windy dirt road that skirts the lake and you end up in the middle of nowhere. The South Fork is gorgeous and contains about the most genetically pure strain of west slope cutthroats remaining in the USA. The scenery is astounding. At the end of that dirt road, flowing into the South Fork, is the Spotted Bear River, which is much smaller but a ton of fun to fish. Not kidding, a wild, native cutt on every cast! Use a Royal Coachman dry fly, they love that fly. There are not a lot of large fish, but the fact that they are purebreds and wild make it a very special experience. There is a fly fishing lodge back there called Spotted Bear, would be worth a guided trip if you can swing that. Just look out for grizzlies. I posted some of my photos on this site, they might still be in the archive.

yea planning to get a guide for the fishing trip, i'm staying 7 days so 3 days will be fishing and 4 days sight seeing with the GF. Anytime away from work is a good time, catching fish is the bonus. July I will be going to Durango colo, for business LOL yea right one day of work and 4 days of fishing.

Hate to point you to another site but I suggest you ask on
flyfisherman.com ( Rocky Mountain board )

As a plug, IMO this site, NJTROUT, Flyfisherman Southwest & RM, and Flyfisher's Paradise run some of the most interesting chat rooms about trout fishing on the internet.

I think that's a credit to the overall quality of the subject matter that's discussed, the features, the participants and moderators on these sites.
