Has anyone heard of Bio-Edge Scents

Mark Branle

Desparation is a stinky cologne
Does anyone have any experience with this product? A group of Fly-fishers from New England used it at our lodge last week and seemed to have success. They would spread it on their Permit flies each morning and soak. They would cast it in front of the school and let it sit there. Not the conventional method of fly fishing, but the fish picked it up almost everytime. Anyone know more about it?

Sounds like they're getting close to baitfishing with a fly rod.
Probably illegal on most US state's FFO waters.

Adding scent to conventional lures and plastic baits is nothing new.
Conventional Bass fishermen consider it part of the game.
Most fly fishers would consider it cheating...

That's bullsh*t. What is the point of fly fishing if it isn't the fly and the fisherman's skill that are attracting the fish?

These same guys probably slip something into a (guys) drink so they can get laid, too. :looser:

:):):)

I guess if it's legal there will be some who will do it. I wouldn't personally, but that's just my choice. Then again, if I go skunked again on my next permit trip all bets are off - LOL

CoolK, please clarify the above statement for us so we can respond appropriately or rip you a new one.......; )

Thanks,

Mel
Putting a scent on a fly.... what a bunch of BS:down:.
You mite as well go and use "Powerbait":finger: if your gonna Flyfish like that.

Is fishing about you fishing, or is it about how everyone else fishes?
Considering that the person who asked operates a lodge at a fly fishing destination, it might be useful for him to know how most North American (and probably Western European) fly fishers would view this practice.

He could lose a lot of "repeat" business, and suffer a loss of reputation, if he started promoting this method.

Mark,

I would say that the fly fishermen here at NEFF would not consider this method fly fishing, but bait fishing with a fly rod. If you were looking for support for this technique here, then you have come to the wrong place. That being said, if you have a client that is only interested in catching fish and not concerned about technique, then this method should help them catch the numbers they are looking for. Personally, if I were to come to Belize to stay at your resort and fish with you, I would prefer the challenge of getting the fish to chase down my fly as I'm stripping it through the water and attack it. That's the challenge I would be looking for. But, to each his own, and if you have clients that want to use scented flys or bait, then more power to them. If I were in your shoes, I would be careful about recommending this method to a client who is an avid fly fisherman, cause they might take it as an insult to their fishing abilities. You would have to read your client and see what they are there for.

Let me know when you are offering free fishing trips to Belize. I would love to fish down there for tarpen or bones.

Mark,

I would say that the fly fishermen here at NEFF would not consider this method fly fishing this coming from a centre pinner.... give me a break, but bait fishing with a fly rod. If you were looking for support for this technique here, then you have come to the wrong place No kidding. That being said you would be best served to have stopped RIGHT HERE, if you have a client that is only interested in catching fish and not concerned about technique, then this method should help them catch the numbers they are looking for like a centre pinner is only concerned with doing while fishing.. numbers. Personally, if I were to come to Belize knew there was an underlying motivation to stay at your resort and fish with you, I would prefer the challenge of getting the fish to chase down my fly as I'm stripping it through the water and attack it now CD is a fly fisherman for fish. That's the challenge I would be looking for HUMmmmmmmm...... But, to each his own we know yours, and if you have clients that want to use scented flys or bait, then more power to them. If I were in your shoes, I would be careful about recommending this method to a client who is an avid fly fisherman like AK Skim, cause they might take it as an insult to their fishing abilities and lump him in with all those centre pinners. You would have to read your client and see what they are there for.

Let me know when you are offering free fishing trips to Belize. I would love to fish down there for tarpen or bones I knew it was coming.. I knew it.

Leave that "stuff" for bass fisherman and centre pinners.

As always, calling it as I see it.

If you are using a scented fly, you might as well be fishing with bait........

Doesn't anyone want a challenge anymore? I'd rather bust my ass fishing a fly without scent and get skunked...................than catch fish on a chemically dependent fly.

Regardless of who turns their flies into bait, if you don't do it, who really cares if someone else does. I don't care that lots of people use bait, it's perfectly normal and usually legal, I just don't find it that rewarding so I don't do it.

Man you are some kinda liberal...

Anyway...

You do what you wish it is ok by me thing you have going on is wrong.

Slap a little of that crap on your fly and go fish KLG....

OOOPPssss....

It is illegal.

But for chiming in I do have a consolation prize for you.

You have a choice of copper or natural zinc coated steel

Don't cry for me Argentina. Ok, I return on the condition that you all accept that I store my flies in my crotch for a more "natural" scent.

Well, I didn't want to cause such a debate over this. We were just wondering if it was common practice in the East to use this method. Clearly, it isn't. Unfortunately we can't control what our guests bring with them or what method they wish to fish. Personally, I thought it was getting close to cheating also. I have fished in the states and in the Northeast, and fully understand the desire to keep the sport in its purest form. Maybe we will implement a no-scent policy. Thanks everyone!

That sounds like bait dunking to me… NOT THAT THERE’S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT. :)

So if I tie one of those rubber “ring worms” with the treble stuck in the end onto my tippet, smear it around in a jar of Bowker’s Dip Bait, heave it out and let it sit in front of a school of catfish… am I fly-fishing?

Maybe if I lash a feather to it...

Seriously it sounds like the same thing. A big fly used to absorb this liquid (dip bait) and cast to a school just lying there? Is the fly rod in a forked stick at this point or did they still hold onto it at least? :D

What about caddis pupa that get stuck to my hook? Does it qualify as bait dunking if I leave them on for a few casts? Or say I find a big, juicy stonefly nymph on a rock... Can I eat it?

You can eat it Kyle (a little katsup makes them go down easier)...just don't get caught feeding it to the fishies.

Katsup goes good on anything. Getting the little buggers to hold still so you can squirt it on them can be difficult at times.
