Forums (Usenet)

Hi everyone,

I've mentioned this before but since the last time I mentioned it, I took some time last night to try to set it up the correct way.

Fixes:
  • Took steps to ensure minimal spam
  • Forums are updated every 10 minutes instead of every 10 days or whenever I remembered.
  • Posts no longer show up with the sites primary posts on the main page.
  • You no longer have to request access
So what am I talking about? Usenet! (Click Here to Learn about Usenet)

Take a look for yourself by clicking on any of the following links:
These three forums are hosted here. There is quite a bit of information within these forums that has been posted from people around the world who share your interests.

The best part about it is, you don't have to purchase an account or sign up for anything to participate. If you have an account here, you're already signed up.

If you have a question or want to post an answer to a question or just participate in a conversation, just do so, the same way you would do with a regular thread here. The only difference when you post to these 3 forums is that your posts will be seen by people from all over the planet.

Why do some of the posts look a little funky? It's the way different peoples newsreaders post the information. You might see quite a bit of threads with, ">" before some lines. Because the newsgroups aren't as advanced as the software used to run this site, there is no "QUOTE" button. When you see, ">" this is the previous persons post. When/if you decide to reply, you don't have to use the ">"... It's automatically taken care of for you.

I've done my best to manually weed out the spam, now the software should take care of anything new coming in. A word of caution... You will occasionally see spam. This includes, sex offers, money making items, etc... I will always do my best to get rid of this stuff but I'm not at my computer 24/7 so sometimes this might take time. Pete is a moderator of the site and does a great job, but he's also not at his computer 24/7.

If someone would like to moderate 1, 2, or all 3 of these groups, you can PM me and I'll teach you how to do it. It's very simple. If you can click the delete button, you can moderate a forum.

Remember, when you post to this forum, it will not show up on the front page of this site. That was requested by quite a few people.

Opinions / Suggestions / constructive critisism, etc... I love to hear all aspects of what people think when I add new features to the site. Believe me, I listen and I try to make things happen.

Thanks!

Dennis

(FYI: As requested, I've also removed the thread preview box)
So what are these 3 forums and why do some of the posts look a little whacky?

Given the world-wide nature of this section, and the fact that anyone can post, I believe we could benefit from more moderators.

Some of the off-topic political posts, go way beyond what occasionally happens when our own members get a little pasionate about conservation issues.

Do any of the Banning options work in this section?
I'm not sure if it's a bot or a determined human, but we're currently having a problem with a UK dissident who won't give up.

Hi Pete, for the most part of it, they are all live people but yes, there are bots in there. If you notice anything consistent in that dissidents posts, I can apply a filter to them. If you noticed, much of the crap is gone.

Has anyone been looking in these groups? They really are very usefull.

He/it seems to be taking a break for now (or went elsewhere).

The obvious consistencies in the 6 posts, that I deleted, were the username and the first two words of the topic title. He seems to be able to hide his IP address from the forum software and substitute an e-mail address (spoofed?) in it's place.

I did "soft" deletes, so you can examine the posts if you wish.

I've been supplementing my retirement income with a part time job (3 hrs/day). Sometime around the 25th it's going to become 7 hours a day (w/o computer access) and continue until after labor day when it'll revert to 3 hrs/day. I won't be spending as much time online during the summer.

Again - We could probably use more moderation help.

Well, I don't want to be a dissident or seem unappreciative, but I don't have any need for usenet forums. I browsed and posted to newsgroups in the past and now prefer smaller, less "global" forums.

I especially picked this forum (and one other) due to their population being fairly local and real, honest people. Too many bots, sock puppets and trolls on the open groups. In my experience, that is.

I don't think you have to apologize Jessie...

The local/regional emphasis here and on NJTrout, and the "small group of friends" atmosphere, is what keeps me coming back.

However, many of our members also participate at places like FAOL and Globalflyfisher with more national/international coverage.

If you're not interested, you can simply ignore postings in the Usenet sections when they're listed on the "newposts" page, or navigate from the homepage where they don't even show.

Yeah, that's what I do. I just thought I'd register my feelings on the issue. By the way, I am also on FAOL and PAFlyfish.com, but I am in lurk mode on those for the most part. Can't keep up with that many forums. :dizzy:

My boyfriend also follows a bunch of forums involving his own hobbies. So both of us fight over the computer. It's pretty pathetic, actually. You know you spend too much time online when you start using internet lingo during conversations. For instance, if I interrupt him and add on to something he says, I get accused of "hijacking his thread". :p
