Fly Swap 08 Pics

I started a new thread for this only because I wanted to try something a little bit different.

In the meantime, here are the flies... It would be really great if each tier would just mention which one he tied and maybe list the materials and the steps in order to tie it along with how to fish it, when you fish the particular fly, and why you chose the this particular fly to tie. Feel free to include any other information too.

Please, the fate of the planet rests on your participation! :sneaky:

This fly is tied to pin-point browns on the Battenkill. I fish mostly still water there and find less or no flash is best. Usually, I wind up fishing in the crappiest weather so I like to keep things dull. There is no ribbing on this Klinkhammer. I do use Hi tack wax and don't do a lot of casting, so the fly holds together pretty well. The rabbit fibers in the dubbing are also very long and I think it helps to keep things bound together. You can see that the hackle is particularly high on the post. I do this so the entire body is in the film. Plane old whiting brown for the hackle. I will tie this fly down to size 22, as the summer progresses, smaller seems to be better. I don't know if all these details are critical, however, the fly works.

I know I'm not part of this fly swap, but I just have to say those pictures are absolutely awesome. Just unbelievable. Well done!

Ingenious photos. Great idea by using a reel for contrast. Nice use of ambient light.

The first fly pictured is the one I tied. For materials and instructions check here. PMDs are very close in appearance to their cousins from the east, the sulphurs, which is why I didn't really deviate much from the recipe.

Thats just not right putting the charlton next to those flys. As nice as those flys are the reel steals a bit of their thunder.:D

Dennis

I have all the material lists and tying instructions. Just have to find some time to put it all together and post it.

The pics look awesome.

Beautiful pictures and a great collection of flies mine is the fourth fly in top row Partridge and Orange standard tie. Fish it on the swing with some weight about a foot above it across and down and hang on.

AHH VERY NICE! My fly's are the 3rd on the top and 2nd softhackle on the bottom.

I like to fish them when the fish are starting to hit emerging caddis. No better way then to fish them on the swing.

Hackle: patridge
hook: curved mustad c068
body: crystal flash
thorax: peacock herl

Wishing you all a drag free drift- DH

mine is the loop wing olive (3rd on Bot.)

hook: tiemco scud (these are sz. 18)
Thread: olive #8
Tail: Z-lon shuck
Body: olive superfine
Tharax: BWO superfine
Rib: fine gold wire
Wing: one or two cdc feathers

I like to fish these as a dropper behind a dry. They just swirl around in the film. They will also get hit on the swing, so be ready fo a sudden hit at the end of drifts. The browns around have been hating these flies.

Nice photos Dennis!

Mine is top row, second from left - Iris Caddis #14-16-18

Shuck: Amber z-lon tied slightly down the bend
Body: Haretron
Emerging Wing: Horizontal loop of clear z-lon
Thorax: Touch-dubbed hare's ear

Imitates the emerging hydropsyche caddis so common on all North American streams. Emergence is late afternoon til dusk.

DennisC- master of levitation. Hey, you must have the ultimate drift- it looks like my klinkhammer is suspended in mid-air infront of your reel.. How'd you do da? :dizzy:

That's what you call a steady hand. I'm not sure what I was thinking when I did that. It was pretty easy though... basically, I was able to catch a few fibers of the fly onto the reel. It kept falling off but I got lucky for a few seconds.
