Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

Fernie, British Columbia

Is anyone familiar with this area? I might be heading out there in a few weeks and need some help. Shuttle service from the airport, best airport to travel into, etc...

Thanks

Dennis,
I have some friends who live in BC and go to Fernie every year. I am looking into going with them this year and they told me the best (major airport) travel is to fly into Calgary, rent a car, and drive though it is a longer drive (3 hours I think). I am not sure if you can get some sort of bus which would be cheaper. If you like I can get some more details for you. Any specific questions you want me to ask?

THanks for the reply! Why Calgary and not Cranbrook. Cranbrook is only 57 miles away as opposed to 120 or so. Is this because of the scenary I will miss if I take the shortcut?

If I were to fly into Calgary, is there anything to do there during the day while waiting for my plane? Is there anything to do in Cranbrook while waiting for my flight?

Would any of your friends want to make a few bux for a taxi on my way back to the airport?

Calgary is definetly a cheaper flight but it's also much farther. My father is flying into Kalispell, Montana and driving to Fernie. He will probably get there before me and pick me up from one of the airports. This will also save on renting another car.

If it's anything like experiences I've had travelling it will save you lots of time. I've found that typically short "puddle jumper" flights take more time than driving.

Plus, if you flight is delayed on the way out at least you should have a better shot at decent food and a bar at a larger airport.

Why do they take more time than driving? Thanks for the advice, I'll definetely consider it.

Typically you can't book a connecting flight without at least 45 minutes to an hour of layover in between. So you've got that delay, then the flight (and any associated delays) then the whole "get off the plane and wait for your luggage deal", then more time while you try to get out of the airport, rent a car, etc.

And also something to consider is limited flight availability in small airports. I just had to spend three hours stuck in the Flint, Michigan airport because there were only two flights a day to Detroit. I could have driven to Detroit in less time than that and gotten an earlier flight home.
