Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

Do you fish opening day (trout) in your state?

It's really for the kids

I have three kids, and my two sons really look forward to opening day. I really go to make sure they have a good time, not really to do any serious fishing on my own.....but if I happen to land a few it's a nice bonus!

It's a mass slaughter -something I want no part of. Even wild trout get taken. I bass fish or go out of state. Hands down worst day of the year for trout fishing.

I haven't fished opening day in years. I'll wait until mid or end of april. I really enjoy fishing once the stocking truck stops showing up later in the year.

With 364 other days to trout fish, with fewer crowds and a-holes involved, these days I usually hook up the boat and just go bassin'.

What's the point?

Who in their right mind would wanna? Well, I guess you could if you know a very remote spot. but I mean who wants to rub elbows with a bunch of guys standin in the water drowning worms?

quiet

i usually find some remote places in nearby streams believe it or not... usually pick up a trout or 2 but usually release them. last year I found some trout(small possibly wild) on the saddle north of hollywood ave.. caught them spin casting on a small size CP Swinger.

Fly casting later in the day this year if it doesn't t-storm

Opening Day Plus 1

Lad's, I do go out on opening day and get a wee bit of fishing in. Mostly I enjoy the Yahoo's that are also out there trying to catch one. They act if their live's depended on landing moby dick. I am one who likes to fish the Salmon River in Paluski, NY, during the Salmon runs, and into Steelhead season. So crowds don't upset me. They are part of the enjoyment of fishing and watching our fellow man attempt to do something only a few of us are capable of doing, catching fish regularly.

I see this year to be no different. On or about 8 AM, I usually like to take along my camera and catch some snaps of the crowds. Zoom in on Lad's trying to retrieve their fly from the tree branch located behind the stream, or the Lad's that just stepped out of an Orvis catalog and still haven't figured out how to operate all the new gizzmo's purchased over the winter.

As long as no one drowns and fist-a-cuff's are kept at a minimum, I consider it a very successful opening day.

Opening Day is a carnival and who doesn't enjoy a carnival. I like to see people of all ages and skills join together and catch fish one time a year. They soon disappear leaving most of my favorite spots in peace. And their license fees are a welcome boon to the struggling Fish & Game workers across the region.

The Devil on my shoulder asked the question why do all the fly fishers fall over themselves complaining about Opening Day crowds and then all jam into the KLG, Pequest TCA, and Heritage stretch of the Little Lehigh the rest of the year when most streams are empty?

Opening Day

I was just wondering if any of you Lads are heading over to PA to do any fishing tomorrow?

Fish on opening day,,,You bet I do,,,,just not on a river where trout are stocked. I like to go carp or bass fishing on the opener. However, I REALLY enjoy the circus. To watch two grown men come to blows over a pale 7 inch stockie makes me wonder which species is more superior :chair: . From May till the closer, I would say we humans are the superior species; however, on the opener, I believe that the average trout has superior intelligence compaired to the average yahoo. Makes me laugh though :thumb:

The Show

Lads, I was very disapointed that the circus didn't happen on Saturday. I know one Lad was looking to take a few snaps, hope he got some of the snaps he was looking for. I just wanted to pay witness to the show.

I did wet a line for a short while in the PM, not much to speak of, practiced casting mostly.

I did not see any game wardens out checking permits, on the Salmon River during the season I would see at least one warden per popular spot. I for one like to see that and only wish NJ would do the same. It has a soothing effect on some of the rowdys that show up only at the start of the season and fade as something else comes into vogue. I was going to claim when golf comes in, however, they don't seem like the sorta Lads to head for the links on a normal basis. While pondering this, I believe back yard B-B-Qing and beer guzzling is the next season for those lads.

I hope my fellow fly fishers enjoyed themselves over this past weekend. Good luck this season Lads and stay safe.

Star-Ledger

Did anyone happen to see the picture in the Star-Ledger of Saxton Falls?? There were about 5 guys standin in a circle like the police roughing up a suspect!!!! I'll bet if they could they would've all used a net like they were drivin for deer or somethin!!!!!!

Yes I usually like to get out on the opener.

Even though we have a lot of streams open yearround, it brings back great memories of opening day with my family.

Interesting fact, After spending a seson with the guidence last year of rford and wiley, among a few others,I will change my original answer of yes last year to NO this year. These guys have shown me that opening day is for everybody else cause we can catch trout year round! There is really not an opening day for me anymore as Ralph has shown me the way of the flyfisherman, and I like it!
I am selling my conventional gear on ebay this year and do beleive I have seen the light and will be fishing with flygear only for salt and fresh this year.
Thanks guys for the schooling,my brain needs the break!

You know me!!! I love crowds. Nothing like standing next to a guy and his kid while they throw 2oz boulders into the pool you're fishing in.

Ok, the truth is... I'd rather take pictures of the people having fun then participate. 2 seasons ago, I got some great shots of people having fun. They were hooked into the same fish and trash talking each other (they were friends, so it was just horse play (and funny as hell)) and they had a blast bringing it to the net. That's the kind of stuff I like to see on opening day.

Of course this type of stuff (crowds)... I used to call fools, but then you learn a story behind what's going on, like the one you just mentioned (seeing the same people after years, etc...) And some on the Musky by the falls where the same people have been fishing. I still think the guys fishing under the falls over there are nuts, but if they're having fun and smiling, that's all that really matters.

Dennis' opening day photo essays are NOT to be missed.

I think that's one of the best ways to spend the day.
( bring along a flask of the good stuff, a great cigar, your camera, and watch the best live fishing comedy show ). Then go home and view Dennis' shots
of the other two rings of the circus that you missed.

You bet! Just another day on the water. Many waters in my area are open year round, so I fish year round. Fish don't get stocked until late April or early May here so what I am catching & releasing are hold-overs or wilds.
If I didn't need to work I WOULD FISH EVERY DAY, WOULDN'T YOU ?

Can't you just go down to the hatchery Near GBS in Warrenstuckyville and shoot the trained trout as they jump through the hoops?

I like to walk through the local park and watch the kids have fun with their dads. It brings back old memories of the thrill I experienced as a kid, could not even sleep the night before, like the night before Christmas. But fishing for me, no.

Hey rford,
You are HYSTERICAL:funnypost .
Sure come on up. From about the location you describe that you want to "fish" I'm sure that the barrel report could be heard loud & clear at the DEC regional office on golf course road in Warrenstuckyville. Let me know how you make out & if the ECO's have developed a sense of humor yet:rofl: .

Seriously, I don't run into the opening day problems or random acts of stupidity:dizzy: that I think many of you do. Less people & more water, I love :bigfish: in the ADKs. "livin' the dream".
Thanks for the chuckle, DH

First of all , Since I fish all year ., I really don't consider it to be first day any longer., When I was young the anticipation was to much. I guess thats why I am into fly fishing the way I am today. But I started on the Broadheads at the age of 10 , And get to that stream on the opener when I can. " Just go a little later in the morning ".

If you ever want too see a TRUE ZOO drive along the yellow breeches opening day , then stop down @ boiling springs PA childrens lake the parking lot is crammed with hotdog vendors, and people are stuffed along the shore and even though its really a big pond an armada of boats are out there jockeying for posistion the catch an release area starts right there I ride my motorcycle down and sit with a few of the other flyfishing regulars and have a few laughs @ the clowns and throw a few out dunkin worms in the catch an release area , Ill take photo's this year and post them:rofl:
