Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

Do you fish opening day (trout) in your state?

yup, i take the two nephews out. If i didnt, they would be home inside plying video games.

I have to admit- I go out and wonder as far away from the crowds as I can. I fish off and on for about an hour or so and then take the rest of the day to drive around and watch the mayhem. I love it when I see the once a year guy using his "light" saltwater spin gear to catch a 10 inch trout.

Now that my son is coming of age (he'll be 4 this spring) I'll probably continue going but not to really fish- more like playing body guard for those who will end up mugging him if he did get a fish to net.

yes, but I won' say where, since I've never seen another fisherman on the stream, and will probably stop going there if I do.

Thanks God we don't have an opening day in West Virginia. I've seen pictures of what it used to be like (full combat fishing) and I'll pass. Been a bad winter for me (because of work) but I usually fish 12 months a year. The truck chasers don't get their fix till Jan. and it stops in the summer then they get another fix around Oct. I don't get on their streams and most don't know about mine.
But with the wild trout (Brookies and Browns mainly only a few reproducing Bows) here, there is no need to call off the dogs. The stocked trout folks get what they want and the rest of us get what we want. Catch 'um and throw 'um back till they are Monsters.

i usually fish stockies on a buddies land on opening day

everywhere is packed with people with worms and there is no place o even wade ... so i usally wait until early may to fish public places because they still stock and there is less or no people there

Opening day this year is April 7th no?
In New Jersey, Yes. I believe that the April 1st reference was for another state.
Possibly NY?

aww ok. I wont go on opening day anyway as it's just too crazy. I think I will hit KLG this weekend. Most years I just wait until mid april to start fishing when all the crowds go away, but Im really itching this year. Boring Winter I guess :D

I live in Southern NJ, but I fish opening day in PA with approximately 15 friends, so when were on the water we're standing elbow to elbow with our friends and not someone who doesn't know stream etiquette. Plus when your friends are fishing that close it's easier to ball-bust...:) I am taking my seven y/o son out of school on Monday to award him for his behavior by taking him fishing in PA (Ridley Creek). This way on Monday there won't be any crowds and there will still be alot of fish for him to try and catch.:D And he will be spin fishing and after he gets a few under his belt that day he will be fly fishing with a nice little 2wt. I'm counting down the minutes to see he grin with his first catch of the day. This is what it's all about, seeing a new member in the fishing community. And there grin from ear to ear letting you know there hooked.:)

I make weekly trips(mid week) to ny for steelhead all season but on PA's opening day I make it a weekend trip and enjoy a reduced number of people on the water.

Unless I can spend opening day with my father i get out of dodge

It's a mass slaughter -something I want no part of. Even wild trout get taken. I bass fish or go out of state. Hands down worst day of the year for trout fishing.

Mark

I agree on the mass slaughter. Got any secret spots you'd like to share?

I've been taking my kids and a few other families with me for the past several years. I know it's crowded and people keep their limit ect. but hey...I have a good time seeing the kids have a good time.

I guess if I had no kids to take I may pass on the morning or find a remote place to fish thats less crowded.

I fish the PA opening day on the Big Bushkill at my cabin. I skip the NJ opener.

The PA one is a tradation with my Grand Pa who passed.

I have missed only one in the last 33 years.

I never used to get excited about opening day because most of the places I fish are not restricted to "trout season", but since I live on the Ramapo River in Oakland, NJ just downstream from the Glen Gray Bridge and have 2 young kids it's a no brainer. Unlike my dad I enjoy fishing and am very glad my enthusiasm for it has rubbed off on the kids and I would rather spend the day on the water with them than at the pool or Six Flags any day...

opening day of trout season is one of those man's holidays, much like opening day of pheasant or shotgun deer season.....

I dont want to get torn apart for this post but i think on opening day this year im going to use my spinning equiptment. Once i catch a bunch like that i will switch over to the fly gear.

Im only going to do this because im still a newb. I just want to catch some fish then i can fly fish.

I plan on mostly using my spinning gear for bass and lake fishing. I also plan on catching a bunch of bass on the fly rod. So my answer is yes i am going to fish on opening day.

Justyn buddy, that is a great idea, just get out and have some fun, that's what it is ALL about.

Do I fish opening day? Is a frog's ass water tight?

Hell yeah I fish opening day I still get me excited for opening day almost as much as when I was a boy. Except now, I don't have the same expectations of catching trout I just enjoy being out and ejoying the day, especially when I see kids and families out having fun fishing. I started taking my oldest nephew (he'll be 10) out for the Southeast PA opener about 3 years ago so that's become a bit of a tradition. W get breakfast at the local rod & gun club, use bait and spinners- the whole nine yards and have a good time. I also go out by myself with the flyrod for the state wide PA opener and NJ's opener.

I'm actually a bit surprised that a little more than 50% here actually don't fish opening day.

no opening day here, fishing is open all year long. just go out when you have time.

I don't even fish opening month..usually start early-mid may and go through the late october hatches of 24/26 BWO's

Yeah, my wife and I do. Since we just started fly fishing this season, we may not fish, but we will go in 2011 on opening day. If our spot is too crowded to swing flies, we'll just watch the fun. It's like being in the front row of a comedy show. It's also nice to see Dad's with their kids, and Grand Dad's with their grandkids having fun. We go because it was tradition in my family. Fish or not, we go.

Haven't fished opening day since my dad passed away almost 23 yrs ago. We used the fish the Willow in Livingston Manor every April 1st, staying in the motel that is right under Rte. 17 (the building is still there, and for sale, but it's no longer in operation). I remember several years fishing while it was snowing to beat the band...once we were snowed in for 2 days. We also ate every meal at the diner in town that at the time was owned by a Czech couple, which was great since my parents are Czech (I'm first generation American), and my dad enjoyed speaking the native tongue while out of the house. I look back at those days as being bonding time between my dad and I....and will cherish them forever.

Ken
