Do you actually like to fish with your family?

I was just wondering how many of you actually enjoy fishing with your family and go out of the way to do it? I for the most part fish for my own sanity, and love to fish alone, but do love the occasional outing with my father. My ex wife used to pretend to like fishing just to keep an eye on me..took me years of being overly nice to her before figuring it out and calling her out face to face to find out she really hated being out. I have a son I never get to see due to ignorance but if he was here,I bet he`d be my best buddy. Do you go most of the time yourself and dedicate a cpl trips a year to loved ones? Do you have that person that gets mad if they find out you went without em? How about the neighbor that is waiting at the truck when you go to leave?

Everytime I bass fish with my boyfriend, he gets disgusted because I catch more than him. After a few half-hearted attempts, he gives up. Usually so he can hop on his tractor where his real happiness comes from. Fishing's just not his thing.

It would be nice to have him along but not if I have to hear him b*tch and moan about having better things to do.

Something I read in a Bill Tarrant book a while back - (and if I may paraphrase) - he was telling the story of a couple of dog trainers, and after they had gotten engaged the guy tells the future missus that he liked to hunt & fish, and liked to hunt and fish a lot. He then told her "You can come if you want to, but don't tell me I can't go."

So that was fine, they got married, and a month or so later he comes in from working with some dogs and sees her loading up the truck with decoys and dogs for a three day duck hunting trip. He says, "but I can't go" and she says, "You know honey, I like to hunt, and I like to fish. I like to hunt & fish a lot, and you can come if you want to, but don't tell me I can't go."

That sums it up perfect for me.

I find that fishing with others can be nice for a change and wish I had anouther like me to go with, haven't had that since my father past away. Then again I like to go to a spot and cover it myself without someone else there to get in the way.

When I fish with others, including family, I almost always feel rushed. From time to time I fish with my father-in-law or my brother but they're not usually willing to stick it out if the fish aren't cooperating. Fishing time is sacred for me, as I'm sure it is for most of you. I usually prefer to go at my own unhurried pace and let the day (or night) unfold as it will. That said, I've had some great days in the company of others.

Interesting answers... it is all about what works for you of course.

For me... well my son is now in the army... these are interesting times for that career.

Fishing with family members... for me... no matter what the results or how slow, rushed, or unproductive as far as fish count or time spent... it beats wondering what the latest news will bring.

But that is just me. Your mileage may vary... and we all walk that mile in a different pair of shoes.

I spent the weekend fishing with my cousin and my brother-in-law.
I started fishing with my dad and after he died when I was a kid ( 13 ) my older cousin used to take me fishing all the time. So the answer is yes withthe caveat, that I like to fish with family members that Like to fish.

My two sons now 8 and 6 were dragged around when very young by there overly ambitious father hoping to genetically instill the love of fishing in them.
I over did it. Now I have backed off and only take them occasionaly, and only if I know its fishing in a barrel. Hopefully at least one of them will eventually learn to love fishing as much as I do.

These answers are exactly what I thought,I am not alone..Thanks for the honesty thus far...Fishing is my Therapy!

I take a few different types of fishing trips. My buddies and I always run about 3-4 trips every spring and at least make sure we catch a buzz. Most of the time I'm by myself, but I do enjoy camping and fishing with my girlfriend, who's an outdoors woman and loves it. Then there's my favorite times to go fishing and that's when my dad comes in. He's been fishing with me for the 27 years I've been on this earth and there's no one else in the world I'd rather fish with. Now let me go get some tissues!

I have one friend that is like me when it comes to fishing. He is a die hard, him and I fish all the time in salt water. What we do is bring two cars incase one of us want to leave wich never happens. Aside from fishing with him I fish by myself, especially in fresh water. I get lots of people asking me to take them fishing to the bay or the beach, I will take them and show them where to go and how to fish the area but they don't become my fishing partners. Hopefully my next fishing partner will be my son when he is old enough. He is only 1 1/2 years old we'll see what happens.

I often fish alone, or at least, without family members. I have taken my wife fishing. Well, to be exact, I took my girlfriend fishing. Once married, I found myself fishing alone. I had always thought that this was a choice I made. But then recently my wife booked me a trip out west, for the three of us, Me, Myself and I. I now know that my fishing alone has been a choice, for the most part, out of my realm of influence. :)

went to a well known WTS last year with my brother-in-law (A-type personality), whom I usually enjoy fishing salt and big water with. He's still alive, but there are some places you're better off fishing alone! :guns:

I do a lot of fishing with family, a lot with friends, and only a few outings per year alone. I really enjoy taking my three kids out with me, but like Ralph indicated, it can be overdone. A 6 year old isn't going to do well on the Claremont stretch......but paddle a canoe into a cove on Spruce Run Reservoir and watch the fun they will have with panfish, perch and some small bass! My wife will go on occasion, but mostly she isn't interested. I only go to the Catskills with friends who are big time fishermen....that's serious fishing time morning, noon, and night. Thinking about it now, the shortest outings I make every year are when I'm by myself.

so it seems that the biggest part of us does alot of fishing alone,a little soul searching maybye. When I was young,I always had somone with me,somone to yell across the pond to..But as I get older,I really love how quiet nature really is. To be away from people and cellphone range is whats lifes about! I am really glad my phone doesnt work at most of my favorite spots. Even when it does work,it still doesnt!:D

Yes I do. Me and my brothers and my cousin fish together alot. We often chat and bs while we are out there. It gives us time to catch up on things. Four guys throwing out four different flies to see what they are biting on doesn't hurt either :D

From my thread in the All Other States Forum:
Top row are my two brothers and I and the bottom row is Brogan (on the left) our friend and Phil (on the right) my cousin.

I work alot of shift work so i usually fish alone, which is good cause it is the only thing in this world that can help me unwind (6-pack works well too). I take the kids and wife 1 month to get the kids introduced to fishing, worm and bobber, not as much fun fishing but great time with the family. twice a year i meet up with 3 brothers and 1 cousin(like a brother) and go north to maine or new hampshire. got hooked on fly fishing on 1 trip to maine with them, first time LLS fly fishing and they hammered march browns. i actually got tired of catching fish. any way, the answer is i like it by myself cause most of the time i have no other choise, but i also like it with friends and family cause it doesn't happen that often.

I have a best freind from youth that goes fishing with me on the weekends somtimes. He has alot of money, therfor he always buys somthing better then me. I work real hard for the little bit of cheese I have so spending 4-5 hundred on gear is awesome for me. He`ll run out and spend 600.00. But I Love this freind with all my heart, his intentions are always in favor of me. I would and will fish with him anytime, anywhere. He knows of all my secret fishing holes and never reveals them to anyone else. I suppose if he wasnt as busy with his buisness as he is,we would fish alot more together. I fish all week and most weekends alone and with no regrets, but since my mind has started to mature, the peace from the river when at it with waders and flyrod,is unbeatable. The water sounds are my life,I need it. I went through a series of insane depression when I found out my wife had been cheating for 5 out of 10 yrs we were married, and if it wasnt for the river, not sure how things might have turned out. Some might say that flyfishing has saved my life. So thats why I love to fish alone.

I will be out in a few minutes somewhere with Jane sitting in a lawn chair along some river while i fish. I don't fish when we do this but I fished for 12 hours yesterday so it's time to "man up".:sneaky:

i enjoy taking my girlfriend when i go fishing, but i hate making a mistake in front of her, and i do feel pressured to catch one,.. Vince

Dave, I fish with my two younger brothers all the time and occassionaly we have a cousin tag along who recently started fly fishing. I grew up fishing with my Granfather every summer, while on vacation from school. So for me not having family around while fishing would be out of the ordinary.

Dave, if you scroll up to NJDrew's thread where he posted the pic, I am standing at the top left of the pic.

Yeah there is always those who like the solitude of fishing and those who like comradery. Either way, its a great day on the water!

well i noticed i was in a picture for this thread so i would like to comment that fishing with those 3 brothers and their cousin is some of the best people to be in the river with... we all rotate holes and info... they arent my blood relatives but they are my fishing relatives!

Dave:

Fishing alone or with family (close friends are family) on any stream is a tonic for what ever ails you. Tough day at work or family matters, it provides us all the time for soul searching answers in a peaceful environment.

I find the best place to really give yourself some time to think is sitting atop a boulder in the middle of a stream and just watching the world go by. Don't even need to wet the line. Doesn't get any better than that some days.

As always, wishing you well.

Tried that one time, on the Ausable. I climbed up on this huge boulder, just to relax a bit and watch the stream, then, after a while, decided to drop a streamer in the water, just to see how it "swam", since the water was so clear... WHAM! A three pound rainbow hit it like it was bacon, & I had to figure out how to get down off tha stupid rock while fighting the fish, trying not to break my rod (or neck) and release the fish. I ended up falling into the river and making a wet release, didn't even lift his head out of the water!
