Went up to South Platte in the Deckers are yesterday and had a blast fishing, though conditions were pretty tough with low, gin clear water (67cfs) and very windy. Normal good flow would be 250 but it's fishable up to about 600cfs. The expected BWO hatch never materialized, probably because of no cloud cover and strong winds.
Anyway, I tried to experiment with the Davy Knot or Figure 8 knot as it is called as well. Wondered if a knot that simple holds up well. I probably caught about 10 bows prior to starting the experiment, and twice my clinch knot came undone (probably my fault anyway). After switching, I caught another 10 or 12 bows, same flies, same tippet (Frog Hair FC, 5x for attractor nymph, 6x for dropper) which I intentionally horsed in through the current. None of them broke off, the Davy knot did not slip or looked weak. Looks like I will be using this knot more often.
One thing I read about the Davy knot that it is almost 100% proof for light tippet. Does anybody have any experience with the Davy Knot for heavier tippets, say 3x and heavier?
Tight lines. -K
