Button Up Your Fishing License

You no longer have to wear your fishing license if you wear a fishing button that you can purchase from the PFBC starting this February. You still have to have your license on your possession if you go with the button option.

I'm so used to having to display my fishing and hunting licenses that I do it anyway even in states that don't require it. I've seen COs on the upper D check me with binoculars without asking me to come out of the river to show them I was properly licensed. so I'd rather display it than not just for that reason.

Another revenue producer for them..........I looked on their site and didn't see anything on this. How much are the buttons?

I'll just display it as I always have.

Brian, there are no CO's on the Upper Delaware. You must have been getting checked out by one of the Village People

Look under Rule makings & Notices, which is under Regs & Laws on the left side bar. I don't know how much the button will cost.

Temporary Changes to Fishing Regulations
Display of License Button

The Executive Director of the Fish and Boat Commission (Commission), acting under the authority of 58 Pa. Code §65.25 (relating to temporary changes to fishing regulations), has taken immediate action to amend §63.2 (relating to display of fishing license and verification of license purchase) to allow the display of license buttons as an alternative to the current display requirement for fishing license certificates. Section 63.2 presently provides that a person required by 30 Pa. C.S. Chapter 27 (relating to fishing licenses) to purchase a fishing license to fish in the waters of this Commonwealth or in boundary waters must display the license certificate on a hat or outer garment while fishing. Starting sometime in February, 2014, the Commission will make license buttons available for sale, and anglers may display them instead of a license certificate. If an angler chooses to display a license button instead of the usual license certificate, he must carry the license certificate on his person and produce it upon the request of an officer.

The Executive Director has found that this action is necessary and appropriate to conserve and preserve fishing opportunities. This temporary modification will go into effect on January 1, 2014 and will remain in effect until the Commission, by appropriate action, amends §63.2. In the absence of such action, the temporary modification will expire on December 31, 2014.

I've also had COs check me through binoculars and I just bend over and show them my brown smell button. They leave me alone.....

What's the advantage of dislaying a button over displaying a license? Besides the obvious flair factor...

Nostalgia for some since PA in the 1920's used buttons, then paper then buttons again until the early 70's I think. The other reason would be to have a more streamlined license on your vest or hat that wouldn't flap in the breeze, and a third might be something a little more waterproof and durable than a printed license. If the cost is fair, I could see using them and helping PA fisheries at the same time.

As an old fart I remember the buttons. I like the online paper licenses since you can print up as many spares as you want for free. I get a three year license now so I may lose a few over that time. To be waterproof I have been laminating the paper licenses for years. If the buttons cost more than the laminating sheets I don't think it is worth it. I already have the holders.
