Nice brownie, i was fishing a stream up near syracuse yesterday with my girlfriend and the Quills were hatching like crazy!! Browns were taking duns off the surface very confidently. I got 7 on dries and 2 nymphing.. No fish under 10 inches!!

Dry fly season is upon us once again..

I had the opportunity to do some fly fishing out in Western Virginia with some guys that hold an annual week long trip this time of year. I'm from upstate NY near the Adirondacks so I was going to be fishing these trout waters for the first time.

Now if you do a bit of research, it’s no secret that the Bullpasture, Cowpasture, and Jackson River systems are heavily trafficked this time of year, and those were the streams of focus for the group I was with. Due to a work commitment, I could only fish for one day… But it was productive and a great introduction for me to the trout streams of the George Washington National Forest.

All told, 7 brown, brook, and rainbow trout between 11-13 inches were caught on my 5 weight. I had one much larger brown inhale a perfectly placed sculpin pattern I tossed into a back eddy behind a couple of big boulders, but after 5 minutes of playing him in heavy current he threw the hook. What a bastard that guy was. Would have loved a picture of him none the less.

Caught this confident guy on a parachute Adams which I found out after my trip is the #1 attractor pattern in the area… although Harry Murray's Mr Rapidan is more brown and yellow.

Actually, it's the # 1 selling dry fly anywhere. Nice report.

And nice PBR. I survived 4 years of college in upstate NY drinking 16oz. "tall boys" myself:beer1:

We also drank a shitload of Legend Ale out of Richmond VA -- the brewmaster was tagging along on the trip. But I like to bring cheap cans with my on the river.

Parachute Adams is a great pattern, my go to when nothing is visibly coming off and trout seem to love it down here. Last summer I did well near the NC TN VA border with that pattern. But I'm also spending more time on tying big streamer patterns this year and that Sculpin was the winner of the trip for me.

Very nice fish...fishing and beer - my picture of heaven. Our upstate NY beer was Utica Club, produced at the Matt's Brewery in Utica. I think you can only get it in a small radius around the area. Always stock up when I get up there.

I used to get a 6 pack of what we called "pounders" (your "tall boys") for $3.50 in college. You cannot beat the price of pbr.

Unless you get Genny Cream Ale -- which is perhaps the smoothest/best, cheapest beer on the planet. if you havent had it, do yourself a flavor.

Luckily I worked at a bar in Wilkes Barre PA in college, so I did get partake in Genesee Cream Ale, it is tasty even at room temp.
