Upper D Interesting catch

Had a great day this past Saturday on the D.

The D is a pretty big area and I don't generally post where I'm fishing on any given day but today I will because I caught an unusual fish in the Stockport area, a brook trout. It's the first one I've ever caught up that far, so where did it come from?

Do they stock these somewhere?

This guy took a size 16 CDC olive and ran upstream with it. I was shocked that the fish was so small because he fought so hard.

Anyway, my first fish was on an articulated streamer. The fish hit it hard and a nice 19" brown was brought to the net.

4pm or so rolls around and some idiot in a camouflage drift boat sneaks in behind me (like 20 feet behind me). I was parked here for the past 2-3 hours, alone. I wouldn't have expected to be sat on top of by a guide but I guess there's an asshole in every crowd.. What a douche. I hold guides to a higher standard that the average schmuck coming down the river, but not this guy, he's right up there with every other schmuck.

I did do something that I NEVER do. Just before this idiot arrived, I put on a prince nymph and caught a nice 14" rainbow who wrapped himself around a thick tree branch in the river. I'm not sure how I was able to maneuver him out of there, guess I got lucky. This brings me to another topic... BOBBERS... Why use a bobber? You need to fish a nymph without the bobber's people... otherwise, you might as well use worms and / or salmon eggs.

I also managed to get a nice sunburn while out there floating without a shirt on... I'm paying dearly for it now!

do you mean camo as in looking like trees and bushes ? I saw a boat Friday that was painted like a brown trout. Just curious.

That Brook Trout does not necessarily have to have been stocked. There are brookies in the local streams.

So far eveyone i encountered on the river this year wading or floating has been nice. I still think you bring the worst out in people. :)

Must be that the FFMP is providing enough cold water to the system if Brookies are making a come back... ;)

I was just having this brook trout conversation with someone on Friday.

You are a magnet for trouble. First the line of fire, then the guy that wants to fight, and now this. Do you have a banana somewhere in that boat?

What's wrong with using a bobber or indicator? Your already nymphing and not dry fly fishing, which sucks. There is no purism in nymphimg.

That pectoral fin has regrown, so stocker. Just think of all the rivers in PA, NJ and NY that flow into the Delaware that are stocked with brookies (100?) and it's not hard to imagine some in the river at times. I think I've caught 2 brookies in the WB over the years. They're just moving between the tribs as they would have even before the dams were built.

Now you made me remember that I actually had 2 banana's in the boat. Come to think of it, I only ate one of them which means the remaining one is baking in the compartment under the front passenger seat! SHIT!!!! I wonder what that's going to look like next week.

I've always been a magnet for trouble and I don't even have to open my mouth!

So what's wrong with using a bobber... If you have to nymph, at least make it somewhat of a challenge.... Go by the feel of your line. My opinion is that if you have to succumb to the lowest form of fly fishing, have some dignity, dammit!

If one succumbs to nymphing, it's a slippery slope. Accept it. Then, move on down to using a bobber... then worms.

The lowest form is when you put a bait hook on the end of that fly line....just sayin' Used to see it on the old Flat Brook fly only stretch even though it wasn't legal. Guys spooled up fly reels with nothing but mono to skirt the laws.:crap:

We have had excellent success with The Prince Nymph this year on the Main Stem UDR.

In the New York region of the Catskills, they also go by the name "Bead Head Bernie".

Dude, you shouldn't even eat a banana 24hrs before the float. I don't even wear Fruit of the Loom in the boat.

I like to dry-fly fish, nymphing is what I do until the hatch starts. I will shamelessly use an indicator of any type, including a bobber. FYI, the takes were so subtle on Friday that I was setting on any time that bobber even twitched. Then the dry fly fishing blew up after 6, it was bonkers.

TN- you promised me pics of some big fish.

Have you tried beads yet on the WB? :)

Look at the head on that bad boy. He may grow up nice and big

If I had any dignity I would not be on this board.

Actually the lowest form of fly fishing is streamer fishing. Those guys are a magnet for trouble and they might as well use Cleo's or Daredevils. :puking-smiley:

I've been getting a lot of brookies in the Catskills this year in places I rarely see them. This morning I did the trifecta of a brook, a brown, and a rainbow in the Acid Factory pool on the Beaverkill. Common in NJ, but a first for the Beaverkill for me.

There have been a few caught this year, and usually every year the same.

One yesterday

Brachy got one while when we fished a couple weeks ago on the WB

I think there are some in the creeks and small streams which feed the system. Perhaps after the recent bouts with high water after storms they've been flushed down to the main river. Bookies of course do have a hard time competing with browns and even bows which is why they have been displaced in many spots in the east.
