Finally got out late Sunday afternoon for a couple of hours fishing, and went to a stream with wild browns where I used to do well, but has treated me to several skunkings in recent years. I was sure that the trout population was severely diminished, and had all but written it off. Just had a feeling that it was still worth another shot.
Got into a very nice and frisky brown that took a couple of nice leaps before coming to the net.
It was a very aggressive take on a #14 beadhead Prince. Water was 56 degrees.
Got into another leaper a bit downstream on the same fly.
Action slowed for a spell; I wandered, caught a small chub, lost the BH Prince on a snag, and switched to a #14 Pink Squirrel nymph.
Decided to try the first spot again since it had now been rested, and hooked another fish. This one didn't jump. It just pulled line and ran for every snag area it could find. Managed to land it, and was quite exited.
Don't know if this picture does it justice since some of it is still in the net, but the fish was 17 inches measured against my rod and very colorful. It had a rusty/reddish hue that I don't see too often.
This was the best wild brown that I've ever caught in New Jersey.
Just walked away after catching this one, but me and the pink squirrel will be back.
