Beaverkill Rainstorm

Hi guys,

did you notice the river gauges? We did get a bit of rain yesterday, but a pretty good slug fell on the Beaverkill. BK went up over 1100 cfs and the other rivers barely budged.

This of course means no Directed releases for Montague and we will get this slug of warmer water into the system.

Been watching closely, Jim.

The accuweather forecast called for nearly an inch of rain in Hancock yesterday.

Similar forecast for Saturday, but the rain never seems to come.

Just terrible.

a few years back many inches of rain fell in the BK Valley in a very short time. 10 inches in an hour maybe. It was pretty damn hairy.

I think I prefer the poor fish on the lower east getting a little break and no directed release since we will have those flows raised shortly next week and the bkill/lower east were in desperate need of a bump in water. Not going to help for long if we don't get some more rain but this helps alleviate some pressure for a bit.

Big ole slug of water... Saw on some maps, 2 to 2.5 inches fell in a few spots... Nothing above Cannonsville.....where we really can use it. No Montague release but they were pulsing down river water anyhow.

Jim... I hope you are right that we jump up the flow tables on the FFMP when June 1st rolls around. Let's all keep our fingers crossed. And perhaps the next storms will put a little water into Cannonsville and Peapacton.

"Hope"?

Mr. Fred, "hope" is what I had in Game Six of the 1986 World Series.

You think with all the mathematical equations and parleys with DRBC, RFAC, NYS DEC, NYC DEP over the years, we'd have a bit more to hang our waders on than...hope.

Your end of the day numbers sir:

I'm going out on a limb here and saying there wont be a bump in the release come June 1.If there is it will be negligible.

Hi Tony Ritter,

See you at the FUDR meeting tomorrow, ,perhaps we can work on a solution to the water flow issue together.

5:00 pm, see you then,

Jim

Looks like a 24 to 48 hour rain event coming.

Just in time too.

See charts and my notes.

Tight lines,

And we're still 68 Billion Gallons above a drought watch.

Good chart from DRBC which gets updated weekly.

Joe, any idea who was the genius that brokered the deal that set 75 degrees max for the water temperature at Lordville?

Why not 72 degrees?

Or... 70 degrees?

Time to revisit 1954 Decree - it's been 60 years.

They said it couldn't happen with NYS Home Rule.

Lower court (2) ruled in favor of the towns.

GasCo appealed to NYS appellate court which upheld lower courts decision.

GasCo then appealed to highest court in NYS - the Court of Appeals - which upheld Appellate and there were are.

Why 1750cfs? Why not 2000 cfs? Or 2250cfs?

You need more grassroots effort and you need to bring in the topic of flooding and voids along with NYC's desalination plant.

You need some politicos in NYC and D.C. along with good lobbyists / attorneys / and deep pockets that have fished this river and have a passion about it.

Then, the wheels might begin to move.

Tight lines.

We both know how the deal was brokered so to speak.I think what's important now is how we move forward.

After speaking with Jeff Skelding at FUDR I'm back in with both feet again.I really think a good plan is being formulated and there are many others who plan on volunteering and helping in any way they can.

As you know there isn't even thermal protection to Lordville today -it's voluntary.

I agree 100% we need funding, lots of it for stream research and restoration (silt and spawning tribs), lobbyists, and or political contributions.
