Atlantic Salmon Where are ya

Well i have been doing research on different spots I can possibly catch me a Atlantic Salmon here on the east coast in the tri state area. anyone have any possible places?

Sea run? - You'll have to go a lot further north.

Landlocked - Here in NJ, Lake Aeroflex, and Lake Wawayanda , in Sussex County, have both been stocked.
I haven't heard much about them as destination Salmon fisheries, but you used the word "possibly".

BTW: In a NJ forum, "Tristate" can be confusing as to what you mean.
In the northern sections it could be NJ, NY, PA, or NJ, NY, CT, further south, MD and DE might get into the mix.

There are a few places but we are talking small returns , so I don't love your odds of landing an Atlantic on our eastern sea board . The Penobscot would be your place but still , how lucky do you feel?

New Hampshire stocks Atlantic into a few places on the Pemigewasset and Merrimack Rivers. Its a 5 hour drive, but thats the best chance I know of. If you want details, I can PM you good spots.

im talking like ct or ri and no im not kidding and im feeling really lucky becuase even if i dont catch one ill be fishing and exploring new river.

Google the NYS DEP they have several stocked locations for Atlantic's that run. Think finger lakes.

The Penobscot is closed to fishing for Atlantic's. That fishery is years away from recovery, if ever.

JCstikfish, thnx for that link , i would consider a trip. IMHO i am all for continued support for Atlantic Salmon restoration on rivers/creeks where its feasible. I have caught small Atlantics on certain Ontario Tribs, I have also witnessed a huge 25 pounder caught too. They are right up there IMHO with Steelhead.Cohos are also a great fight too. I wonder if they have stocked them in the lakes mentioned Aerostock and Wawayanda do they have feeder creeks or brooks?Maybe there is a small spawining run?

At the rate they keep gettin rid of those dams on the Penobscot, and with continued support from hatchery raised wild stock one day there will be fishable populations again.

Pound for pound I will take an Atlantic any day over a steelhead or coho, not that I would kick either to the curb as I am a steelhead junkie. While only having fished the Lake O. tribs in hopes to catch one, I have hooked two and landed just one Atlantic which was in the 12lb range since I started fishing the area in 2007, let's hope for better returns in the upcoming years.

If you want to fish for landlocks (genetically the same as Atlantics, but not as big), you have options. Some tribs on the NY side of Lake Champlain are options. There are other places in VT to go, if you do your research, you will find them, and have a good shot at catching fish. These are hard fighting fish, worth the effort.

Lake Waywayonda requires fishing the lake (no fun for me). If there was a decent feeder stream to that lake, well, then it would have been very different story.

Most people here know I like the Finger Lakes. You are towards the end of this years run. Not tons of fish, and you have to hit it right. However, if you have a pod of salmon in front of you all is right with the world. Need of push of water to bring them in and they aren't in long - but if you watch you can hit them. Fall Creek, Cayuga Inlet, and Salmon Ck on Cayuga, Catherines Ck on Seneca, and maybe Gout Brook on Skaneatles if you feel really lucky.

You can fish for Salmon right in the Catskills. I am not a very good Salmon identifier but this is from the Neversink above the reservoir. It is a grueling hike to to get to the 300 yards of public water above the reservoir but if you're there to follow the smelt in the spring, I understand you can get these. What type of LL beast is this anyway...thanks.

The browns in Rondout are from the Seeforellen strain- not the regular German browns. They look JUST like Landlocked Salmon... Just google image search Seeforellen
