The Bamboo Guy!
I have some friends coming down from Maine on Presdidents's Day a NE holiday for a couple of days. My guess is Beaverkill and Willo won't have any hatches then but am wondering about W. Branch, Mainstem and E. Branch. Given I get lucky and get decent water level are there "normally" hatches that early? thanks in advance. andre

Andre,
The west branch usually has some dry fly action at this point. It may not be full blown in every hole but look around and you will find some. A good spot is the first gamelands pool, I always have luck there early season. As it approaches ill send you a message on how its going I'm usually up there every weekend starting april first so Ill let you know. Good luck

Hey Andre I'll be up that way on april 16 and 17th. I'm tying at the Fly Tyers Rendevuos April 16th at The Rockland House in Roscoe.

Andre,
You could be right in the thick of Hendricksons. All depends on the temps. You should also see the Red Quill, Blue Quills, a possible Quill Gorden (not sure if they are still around up there)

The Blue Quills will most likely be around first. Its worth a shot. Possibly even on the Beaverkill and Willow. If you head up and there is NO mayfly action, you could walk the banks and chuck streamers.

Andre,

Hendricksons will probably be later, unless the weather (and water) turns warmer by the time you get there. It can, I've seen it. But the most probable hatches are the Quill Gordons, Blue Quills, and stoneflys in about a size 12 or 14. Also, if conditions are early, you could see good caddis hatches, but that's typical a little later (beginning later in April or early May). All weather and water dependent, as you know. Good luck.

Too soon to tell.

Would depend on river flow and water temps.

We've still got about 4 to 6 weeks of winter left up here.

Right now, The Eddy in Narrowsburg has blocks of ice.

Looking at my notes from Y2002, on April 16, the MS was reading 3.9 feet and 65 degrees.

65 degrees! And it went to 72 degrees on April 18th.

Hatches were way ahead of schedule that year.

Very unusual. Of course, there was no snow pack during the winter of 2002. There is this year.

It pays to read the daily numbers at:

It is to early to tell for sure.Depends on water temps water temps and water temps.I have seen Hendricksons at this time in some years on all the rivers. If you dont mind fishing the Neversink I would bet that you WILL see good hatches of Blue quills, caddis and Hendricksons by that time. The hatches start earlier there(warms up first). As we get closer I AM sure you will have plenty of reports by than.

I remember that spring green drakes on Arpil 20th!Hendricksons in the early am and spinner falls at dusk - like summer time. You neva know if it gets warm and we get little rain might end up the same, not much snow pack this year :(

Andre,

As others have said it is too early to tell. Hatches and flows could be all over the map in mid April. That said I've had some excellent fishing on the West Branch and the main for that matter at that time of year. Whatever happens, the Neversink will very likely happen first (Joe T taught me this). Be flexible, tune in to what's going on and you'll find the fish. And... I know once you find them... they are in trouble!
