A sad day in the SIMMS household

Well,

This morning my dad spazzes my phone with texts of urgency. Due to his massive hands, more times than none, his texts make no sense. I have been getting good at reading code, though. However, this morning, it could not decipher his texts. But, I somewhat blame the 6 skull splitters and 4 breakfast stouts last night...Anyway, he finally calls me when I dont answer him via text in time and I hear his voice crackling.

"Its done," he goes.

Now, I am getting a little worried as im not sure if he just killed someone or divorced my mother.

"WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT," I exclaim.

"My thomas and thomas, its done. its broken," he goes, "I took it out of the rod tube and the tip is busted."

This rod has accounted for thousands of trout for my dad, one of his favorite rods he has ever used to date. A 9 foot 4 weight. It is a fricken rocket launcher. I would put it up to any rod out there, with money. He built this rod about 8 years ago with top of the line components. It was a work of art and it fit him perfectly. So when he took it out of the rod tube this morning to find out it was now a 8'6'', I guess you could say he was a little upset. lol

So, I immediately got on the horn and phoned T&T. Wendy was chipper this morning, and informed me my father would be receiving a brand new blank, one of their newest series out there. My father just has to send in his broken rod, and they will strip guides and reel seat.

So, I called my dad back and gave him the good news. His mood immediately changed and I could feel the smile through the phone when I said you will be receiving their newest line, no questions asked. He quickly boxed up his damaged rod and made his way to the post office. The rod should be here within 2 weeks, which then, him and I will sit down and tie the rod together.

I just broke my Loomis Native run, but didn't feel nearly as bad since its a factory rod and will be replaced no questions asked. Sure, it has accounted for lots of stripers and chrome, but it was not a rod I built from scratch. Plus, the cork was getting soiled anyway, I needed a new one ;)

Moral of the story, breaking custom rods SUCK. Im sure its even more heartbreaking when one of those fancy RONBO rods breaks...shit, imagine one of them breaking while fishing with beads?

Tight lines!

There's a couple ways to look at this. Yeah it sucks, a rod that has done your dad well for so many years, provided so many memories, and labored over by his own construction. I've been there myself for sure. Looking at it through a glass half full perspective. Your father now has a great winter project ahead of him. Even though they are sending him the components back, he can take this 2 weeks and have a blast researching and discovering some of the newer pieces of hardware out there and resurrect this rod with all new goodies.

T&T has been a company that has certainly been through its up and downs ove the years. Your the 2nd person in a few weeks to have relayed a positive experience with their response and customer service. I hope they keep it up. I do not have a T&T rod in my quiver and might just need to find a reason to build one so I can support this American company.

While the amount of time spent tying a fly is no comparison to the time spent building a rod, here's a glimpse of the "WTF" feeling of when you break a rod you built. You know that perfect fly in your box? The one the you tied many of to make perfect and you finally perfected every piece of material to construct IT, the fly, in fact, you would eat it yourself if you could. It's kind of like taking that fly, and losing it in a tree on your very first backcast...............not that any of us would ever have that happen.

I would post a link with some inspiring content in it for your father, but I would have to answer to the NEFF Link Enforcement Division, and I'm not up for the hassle today, so I'll leave you with this. Tell pops the LyNcH said to cheer up, his replacement rod will bring him an equal amount of years of joy, especially if they are spent fishing with his son. I've said this before and I will repeat myself. You are as lucky as it gets to be able to enjoy this great sport with your father.

The old saying applies here as well: better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all...

HUMmmmm....

Didn't SIMMS already break one of his rods this year?

Maybe after you broke the first one and you still needed to fish with something....

Now I am not going to say it.. but you did say when he opened his rod tube to discover it broke....

I know that sometimes rod socks get mad and take revenge.

Before I pass judgement, I shall wait for the PAUL HARVEY version

While I do have the slogan following me everywhere I go, "Like a bull in a china closet," Im afraid it was impossible for me to damage his rod, as I am 300 miles away.

So NEFF, closed minded and an empty stomach, I say unto you in the words of my uncle: Allez Cui-fuck you!

What kind of language is that. Is that from my beeds comment in another thread?

AHhhhhhh....

When your father discovered the rod was damaged you were 300 miles away.

I think his TXT blamed YOU.. and that is why you scrambled to get T&T on the line and get you off the hook.

I checked with T&T and since bead fishing come to be they see more and more broken tips because of fishing that style.

At one time I owned more broken rods than whole ones. That wont be the case when I return home next Fall. Hopefully the wife doesn't find out how much bamboo rods really cost. :fart:
