I've gotta tell you guys. This event keeps getting better!
Before the event, I took a ride over the Shehawken so I could see what the West Branch looked like at 25,000 cfs. As you can see, the boat ramp is nowhere to be found.
I didn't think I'd be doing much fishing but since I haven't fished since 9/11/2011, I figured I try anyway. I went into my bag to get the reel with the sink tip so I could put a full sink line on it but I left it home. I had a bunch of other reels in the bag but figured I'd use the Charlton. I went to rig it up, tied on my streamer rig, then realized that I hadn't even thread the line through the guides. I made my way to the river and took a bunch of casts. I wasn't wading, just walking along the banks. I managed 1 15" brown in a little eddy. The fish fought hard and strong. What a way to start off the season!
Over to the FUDR event... Each year the even improves somehow some way. This year we had a new member sign up to the site ("The Giggler") who made a great dinner for everyone.
I saw quite a few old faces and some new. All in all it was a great time. On the way out, I caught Joe D. digging through the FUDR program and well wouldn't you know it... Look who popped in to say hello without actually present at the event!
AKSkim decided to take out a brilliant 1/2 page ad. I'm not sure how many of the folks inside got the humour but I thought it was pretty cool and very nice of him to mention North Eastern Fly Fishing along with his good luck wishes! Thanks AK!
Honorable mention goes to Tom Khoury who recently got engaged! Poor guy. I offered him my condolences just like all of you should. Here's a shot of Tom and his buddy, Brett.
Aside of the people I did meet, I also noticed a few familiar names on tags of people who said they were coming but for someone reason could not.
Although the water was pretty high, I'm sure a few of these guys pulled nice fish out of some of the back eddy's.
On the way back, I stopped at a few pools on the Beaverkill. The Sunoco Pool was very fishable. Using the same streamer rig I used on the D, after 20 minutes I called it a day. Lots of Hendricksons were popping but no fish on them. I stopped at Cairs Pool too. A few bugs were hatching but not like further downstream. Again, no fish were rising here either.
Without rushing this fishing season, I'm really looking foward to next years FUDR fund raiser.
For me, this kicks off my season. I'm no longer as hardcore as many of you fishing all year round. Hey, someone has to manage this place; so while you're out catching fish, I'm busy making this place better so you can come back and post about your outtings!
