2010 Favorite Fly Swap(s)

Wow! With most fly swaps you get mediocre flies and run-of-the-mill patterns. This swap offers a wide variety of excellently tied flies. Great job to all!

All group one flies went out today with the exception of those tyers who decided to join group 2 as well. You guys (Yuzz Guize "isn't that NJ Vernacular?") are just going to have to wait a bit longer.

Ha, Believe it or not, the best lights were over the bathroom vanity & the back drop is a lid from a blue plastic tote box. Outdoor light is always the best but darkness was upon me at photo time. I did a group shot outdoors today- see the previous post. ~DH

Awesome pictures, how do you set those up? I can't wait to get in on the next swap. I'm starting to produce things that look like flies. :)

I was going to ask you to photo how you have your photo bench set up?

The photos you took of those flies are outstanding.

I was thinking natural light bulbs... etc...

They are very good photos.

I have a pretty good "house camera" ie. my wife won't let me take it fishing. It's a Sony DSC-H7. What I know about digital photography would fit in a coffee cup but I manage to take enough bad photos to get a few good ones.

These are some of my best photos taken outside with the side of our "ghetto" pool as a background.

Wish I could snap shots that good Chris.. looking forward to receiving the swap flys. The fly I tied is basically an anchor fly a variant of the big turd. I call it the cowpens because that is what the text below the anchor tattoo on my great uncles arm reads USS Cowpens.

I just received my Flies!

Now DH took some outstanding photos, but they are even more impressive when holding them.

I showed my secretary DH's fly.

She didn't like it. It looked too real.

Received the flies and I have to say they are all outstanding
Thanks DH for hosting the swap, great job.
One question, I have never fished a turd before any tips
on the best way to fish this baby?

It can be used as an anchor fly Euro nymphing or fished under a bobber. I have found though that most of the time the fish come to the turd, at least this winter. I usually fish it solo under and indicator, its heavily weighted so I find that I dont need to mess around with split shot. I do real well with this pattern on the musky, but have heard this is the hot collor on the D for those that like to nymph.

I think they take it as a stonefly, I have seen Matt G. Post a similar fly the only difference is that I add the orange band around the throat as a trigger, kind of like a frenchie on steroids. I think they take it for one of these guys...

Thanks artoflee
I'll have to give it a try, I thought it may be a stonefly imitation.
Looks like a trout killer, nice fly.:)

Big Spinner,

Any reason for tying the big spinner on the Tru form hook without the bottom Post? In your opinion is their any benefit to leaving it off other than saving time? In your fly fisherman magazine article you suggested using a different model hook hence the question.

Hi Art of Lee!!!

No real reason to leave off the post. IT is not needed, as these flies float like corks with all the zlon. I sometimes even rub some floatant into the trailing shuck. This hook makes the fly look cooler to me, not sure if the fish care. I like a 4x long streamer hook for the basic big spinner, although nearly any hook works well.

The other minor reason is that on big flies, I like a fly that is going to collapse in a fishes mouth and go in easily. I am convinced I sometimes miss a fish that did not get the big fly in its mouth because the still tails or something stuck on the outside of his mouth!

I tie this same spinner in many sizes. You use only three materials plus thread. The smaller ones go pretty quick, but the big ones use so much dubbing, they take some time.

I think that split tails, in addition to being a pain to tie, are one of the causes of a fly spinning your leader in a knot. If they are not balanced, the fly can spin.

I can tie this fly much faster and they work great. I did not tie any of the really big spinners I use, as they tend to scare people away and they do not fish them. Seriously, try these babies out, they really work.

The other anvantage is that you can see them!!! Even on the dark. I nkow for certain that the fly is going down the feeding lane. This can be important, especially during a heavy march brown or drake spinnerfall. The fish do not eed to move 2 inches left or right.

The other thing that helps this fly, is the small drop of superglue at the base of the wing. IT will keep the wing from folding down over the fly.

Jim

Great looking flies everyone! I can't wait to get them in the mail and find a spot for them in my fly boxes.

Second from the bottom is mine. It is an emerging olive.

Hook: TMC R200 16

Thread: Rusty Brown 8/0

Tail and nymph case: Natural Pheasant Tail

Rib: Fine Copper Wire

Post: Z-lon

Parachute Hackle: Natural Dun

Thorax: Light Olive Superfine Dubbing

This is a great fly to fish early in the hatch. Fish it with only the front Frogs Fannied up, and let the tail part stay below the film.

Have a great week all,

brough
