Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!
AS,
"It was only a matter of time that these two outstanding
publications went from perfect bound to staples."
Uh, these magazines, when they originally came out, were stapled.

Is there any puppy cuter than a Golden? I've had 2 and don't think so.
Congratulations and good luck with Winston and Sage. By the way, I recall reading or hearing that the color of the adult dog can be seen by looking at the color of the puppy's ears.

There used to be a breeder in Avis, PA. The family only breed Goldens. Not sure if they are still there or breed. At the time we visited the farm, I almost placed an order for one of their pups from the next litter. However, the litter was due in late fall and there was no way for us to get it...
Interesting numbers that I believe are accurate. I recall reading on a site or sites some people talk about tying speed. Recall it mentionmed that there are fly tiers who can tie 24 or more standard dry flies per hour, and I don't doubt that it's possible (I once tied 24 pheasant tail nymphs in...

In addition to the photo of the one tied by Mary Dette (btw, did you notice the proportions?), these are some examples of nice segmented bodies.

Okay, I'll say it. While a nice tie, the fly looks more like a Red Quill then it does a Quill Gordon. Totally agree with Andy. If you can, go select some peacock eyes and strip your own. Takes, regardless of the method used, only a minute to strip the herl off of the quill. Through selection and...
Yes, the peacock quill, from the eye of the tail feather, has a distinct segmentation. It's become harder and harder to get good peacock quills. By that I mean quills with a very light and dark segmentation. It's interesting that I recently read the Notes & Letters of Theodore Gordon and even...
Broadhead,
You wrote: "I finally broke down after years of tying with natural quill for my quill body fly's and decided to try a synthetic quill."
Now I think I'm correct in saying that McLean's quills are natural porcupine guard hairs that have been dyed. Similarly although not commercially...
That looks like the old 'figure 8' knot. Was recently reading a few old books and that knot was mentioned, I think in the Notes & Letters of Theodore Gordon, as a simple to tie and strong knot. I haven't tried it, I use the 'Improved Clinch', but I'll try it this coming year.

AK - The only thing I can see from the ad is that I prefer the fly patch to be on the left side of the vest. No hat, maybe?
Corndog - "What a dufus. It's obvious the model they used has never picked up a fly rod before. Do they think we're idiots?"
Would you identify what it is that makes you...
Furled leaders may cast well and lay out nicely in calm conditions. However, try casting them in wind or once they become waterlogged. They do not have the backbone that mono has and 'they do not respond well to wind', to paraphrase Sean Connery's character in the movie Search For Red October...
