A high quality bamboo rod

This question is for the serious bamboo rod builders out there, or bamboo enthusiasts who know more than me.

The guides of a high-quality cane rod are generally "agate." Why is agate considered to be better than tungsten?

Thanks. I'm doing my own research now.

Yes but let me ask you this. Do you know what Granger rods sell for today..Melonhead

Your alligatored Granger with damaged tips was purchased, from all the evidence I could gather, for about 450 dollars.

Remember how you tried to raffle it off, you douche bag? For a profit?

All the while leading us to believe it was for charity?

MACFRAUD!!

Douche bag...ouch you offend me. Yes I offered it for raffle. I believe a ticket was 20 bucks. If. Enouh folks joined then money was to go to NEFF and project healing waters. However not enough folks joined. But that wasn't the question melon head. I asked if you knew what. Granger could be sold for today.not what I paid for it at an estate sale. So do you or don't you. Btw Ronbo said it was a classic rod. I take it you are calling him a liar then.

Oh I am on topic..Unlike the comments you are making. Im asking you a question about a classic bamboo rod. Do you know the answer to that question or are you going to obfuscate further. Here is a book you should consider getting. It will be out shortly.

Goodwin Granger : The Rod Man from Denver - Home

Now I wonder why they would go to so much trouble to write a book about this lowly production bamboo rod. BTW this is the second book on Granger Rods

MacFRAUD, you tricky son of a BITCH!

I have trouble keeping up with your shiftiness. You is one tricky son of a bitch.

However, MacFRAUD, you can't trick me about this Granger of yours.

ALLIGATORED VARNISH and DAMAGED TIPS.

ACQUIRED FOR 450 DOLLARS, and RAFFLED TO OBTAIN CONSIDERABLE PROFIT.

ALL THE WHILE, CLAIMING IT WAS FOR CHARITY!

BWAAAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHA!

WE SHALL NEVER FORGET.

How am I being shifty? Its a simple question..can you answer it...and can you answer the other one I posed about Ronbo. A man who clearly knows much more about Bamboo fly rods than you or I. So can you answer the questions or not

Why not just answer the question?

Agates were around before tungsten. The old silk lines would cut through anything else. Some of the old reels also had agate line guards. Granger's bring a big price for production rod.

girls you need to stop... pm each other with this crap seriously

TF I tried that but Mcbeetle wants this out in public. Take note that he likes to bring this topic up at least once a week. So Im just asking a question..nothing more nothing less. BTW the book I posted is excellent if you are interested in Bamboo Rods and their history

Ladies......if you gonna wrestle like this get a room............and an internet camera.

The first guides used were nothing more than steel rings attached to the rod with a strap, they were not very good and fell out of favor quickly.
next up were what were called trumpet guides that were basicly metal tubes that were flared on both ends, these were better but heavy.
Then came the agate guides which were more durable and added a nice touch to the bamboo rods. the most popular colours availble first were white and red.
the agate guides became standard on bamboo rods and really enhanced the beauty of a rod. The Mildrum guide was next up, it was much cheaper and easier to produce and become standard on lower quality production rods, these guides were very durable and 1/4 the price of agate guides. some companies even went to a snake guide to cut costs when snakes became available.
they are actualy the newest guide selection to come around besides the ceramic single foot availble now.
Now to answer the question. I build all my rods with Agate striper guides. It is purely astetic as the mildrum guides will outlast any agate and the agates are more suseptable to damage.
In my opnion there is nothing like a beautiful agate guide mounted on a fine bamboo rod and is the only striping guide I use.
Hope this answers your question Beetle Man.:D
Ronbo

Agates look nicer but carbides are more durable. It's up to the individual as to which is better. All of my personal rods have Mildrums or Perfections for the stripper but most of the ones I've made for other people have agates.

Mr. Klett and Mr. Frost:

Your responses are appreciated.

I apologize for the distasteful posts you've endured in this thread...

It is due to a fellow named MacFRAUD.

His crude posts to this thread are the least of his misdeeds.

Your posts, however, are appreciated.

And I thank you.

Sincerely,
Golden Beetle

I was Offline.... we old pharts need our sleep.

Since the original poster was the first to get abusive, I'm not going to try to sort out which posts belong.... You hijacked your own topic.....

I was tempted to move the entire thread to an "open discussion" section, but Ronbo's and Jklett's posts were worth preserving.

I'm leaving it alone .... for now.

Thanks for that info Ronbo. IMO if a bamboo rod doesnt have the agate stripping guide its not a quality rod. Like you said, its about the beauty (and nostalgia) more then functionality. Seeing as you said agate was the first real good solution for guides, i guess they are a good classic thing to put on a modern bamboo to keep it period specific.
