Your preferences on 7 pc rods..

Brookie's or Bust!
Ok, so yet again I'm in the market for another rod.

This time I'm looking for a GOOD quality 7 piece fly rod, as I do a decent amout of hiking/back packing.

Not a whole lot out there to choose from. But im kinda leaning towards the Orvis Frequent flyer 8'6" 3wt.

Ideally Id rather have a rod with a Gaurantee, as the FF isn't covered by the 25 year gaurantee Orvis offers to their higher priced rods.

Im just wondering if anyone has any better suggestions..

You may want to consider a 5 piece or 6 piece. Generally a 7-8 rod will tend to be very stiff, which is great for launching line but not so much for close accurate presentations. Not sure what kind of pack you rock when you hike, but most hiking packs could accommodate a rod tube. Check the tfo bvk rods, they offer a 5 piece and also a conversion kit to go with there 8ft 3wt to make it a 10ft 3wt. Plus tfo has a lifetime warranty. :)

Not sure what kinds of streams you're thinking of fishing, but based on a 3 weight, I'd think on the smaller size. Give a thought to a Tenkara rod. Nothing folds up smaller and you won't have the stiffness issues a 7 pc. rod brings to the equation. You can fish dries, nymphs or streamers with Tenkara and they fit into any backpack or vest.

Yup, Im focusing on smaller streams and small ponds. I initally thought about buying a Tenkara rod, but that would'nt be practical on the ponds I stuble upon. But I do appreciate the insight!!

March brown flyrods are to me the best pack rod you can buy. Check them out.

Wow, that rod company offers TONS of packable options! Im suprised how many different lenghts/weight combonations they have. I really like the Hidden Water convertible rods, the 7'-6' 4wt would be the most sutablibe rod for me. I think it would be cool if they made the 4wt a 7' - 8' 1/2 conversion.

Do you know if their Lifetime Gaurantee covers accidental breakage?? If so I think you may have me SOLD Mac!

TG I would give them a call. They are very cool to deal with. I can't remember if they cover accidental or not. Good time to buy as they are having a sale plus an extra 5% off using the promo code at the top of the home page.

Younmight want to take a look at Albright rods. They make a five pcs. For the price you can pick up two

I can strap my 8' 5" three piece Winston, in its tube to the side of my pack, you wouldn't even know it's there unless you looked...It is not a metal tube..it is fake canvas and has a handle that velcros around it so the tube won't slide up and down when hiking............I see no need for a new rod..ohh shit, that sounds like my wife!:)

how do you strip a streamer in with a tenkara rod? :)

You don't strip it, you manipulate it by twitching the rod tip. It imparts the same action as stripping a streamer on traditional rods. You can fish it up, down or across stream.

Yeah, the ponds will rule out Tenkara then.

Try to find a used Redington Wayfarer 7'6'' 7 piece. The best casting packable rod IMHO. I have a 5 weight It fits in the back pocket of my vest alng with a pair of Chota hippies. I can keep this rig in my work van and fish after work. Sadly I dont think they make them anymore.

I'm happy with my Cabela's stowaway 6 pc rod. It's a great rod for the price and they go on sale a couple times per year. I bought mine for $89 bucks last year around this time.

There's a bunch of March Brown rods on sale at Sierra trading post right now...
Sierra Trading Post - March Brown Hidden Water Fly Rod - 7-Piece, 3-6wt
...you might like that one

I actually got some wacky generic 7 pc rod from them...I never knew if it was an accident or some promo (they used to have weird giveaways). I forgot I had it until the other day...

That said I think a 4 pc would be enough, I have a 3 pc 7' 4wt and it tucks into a pack just fine

The sale on the march brown web site is better right now Phil.

Yeah, the ponds will rule out Tenkara then.

And then a big trout takes your streamer and breaks your line because OH SHIT! You were fishing streamers with no reel! :)

I've had a March Brown Hidden water in a 3wt for years, and love it. I do have to say that Tenkara rods also are option, and I actually bought one to go backpacking and have loved it so far. The Orvis isn't a bad choice, just cast it first since it's a little bit stiff.
