WINTER STEELEHEAD: Keeping warm

New member
This past week during the bash we had 1 somewhat cold snowy day and I found out real fast that multiple layers under waders with storage built in the chest (g4's) and a shell over top is damned uncomfortable.

With boxes n such in my waders and jackets under my waders I couldn't bend over far enough to touch my knees forget my toes.

Simms new jacket looks nice for getting the gear out of my waders but $550 is over reaching just a little.
I can get a much more practical Chugach rain shell, and most likely better built, from KUIU AND a high end down hoody from them for nearly that price.

What's your system for those frozen winter steeleheading trips?

jim I dealt with the same shit tried everything during winter steelheading last winter finally gave in and invested in good base layers and a G4 jacket and think i got the formula down. i go waderwick ->fleece->nano jacket->g4 and havent been cold or wet since. some guys swear by merino wool base too. i think LL bean has good deals. spend the money youll thank me when i drag you to pulaski in february.

also as for tackle storage my g4 has more pockets than i know what to do w

First thing I stopped doing was wearing cotton. It does nothing regardless of how heavy the material is (like a sweatshirt hoody). My system now is two layers of underarmor, a fleece, and wait for it---a really ugly turtleneck holiday sweater. I bought it for an ugly sweater party a couple years ago and its now my fishing shirt. The heavy wool really keeps you warm and its not that heavy so long as you stick to the lighter under armor layers underneath. As a final layer I do a simms rain jacket and thats just for waterproof protection. Trust me- go to a thrift store and buy an old 90s heavy wool turtleneck sweater. Its as warm as you can get.

I'm heading up tomorrow for a 4 day trip and will be up there the next 3 weekends. Give me a shout if you are heading up and wanna fish.

Buy a nice ski coat...and fish in it......warm and freedom to move.....pick a subdued color...,mine is bright red so fishing in it is probably not the best option, but I have, it is water proof, warm, easy to move in......a win win.....
just because it is for skiing doesn't mean you can't use it for anything else...

Use boot waders and layer up!!!

I wear my G4 shell over my nano but i type it like NANEAUX because its cooler and keeps me warmer.

NANEAUX...

Sneel hit it..

But imma one up all yall...

Just picked the SIMMS EXSTREAM jacket...Thing is beautiful... Its a bit hot as I eat dinner in it though.

I have heard nothing but good reviews with this jacket. Going to pair it with my SIMMS waderwickand go from there. I'm thinking i can leave the SIMMS merino wool at home.

Jacket fits close to the body, not bulkey at all. Water resistant when you dont wanna wear the G4....Really sharp.

When you look good, you feel good. When you feel good, you fish good!

Jacket is GREY...idk why my camera makes it look green.

I go with merino wool by First Lite or Wool Power in real cold weather. Then Simms cold weather pants. On top first lite merino, Cabelas outfitter fleece and a riverwest jacket. I use a fishpond vest outside of it all. Its mesh so rain or snow does not matter.

I do like your idea of Kuiu Chugash with a super down jacket underneath. A lot of fishermen that dont hunt dont know about a lot of good cold weather gear. I think im going to sell my G4 and just use my Sitka Gear downpour jacket

i like to wear this tweed jacket that i got at a thrift store in montana when i was 18.

You go to ugly sweater parties? You've been hanging around those NYC hipsters for too long man.

The most important consideration is your legs and feet. Check out fox rover socks. The best cold weather socks you can get. Simms please by the womens version. The men's verison will be too big for your bony ass.

How much did the jacket run ya, and are you worried you might not be able to make your next student loan payment?

Seriously, how much are just the clothes on your back?

I'm guessing 2k.

And the rods, all new gear, every year.

And a new truck, just last year?

Or is it old? As in 2 years old.

Now is the time for you to talk about the lazy and unemployed, isnt it?

How about it, Simms?

Tobias, waitin on you man.

Your no doubt the neff authority on surviving the cold. Put down the right wing conspiracy mags you get all your "information" from and post up the goods.

thnx in advance

Its only paper, they print more.

I was up last weekend and spoke to a guy who was using Thunderbolt electric socks. He was an older fellow and said they worked great but expensive. Being as how I prefer stocking foot waders with boots I'm looking into a pair. Anyone ever use them?

peaked my interest cause I haven't figured out a way to keep my feet warm for hours on end while hunting... but for that price tag, you'd think there was at least an on/off switch

"Often, it is not necessary to keep the electric socks heating constantly. By periodically removing the battery connector plug from the control box, you can extend your battery life considerably."

Wearing Electric Socks in a river with the possibility of them getting wet would make me nervous tho...

I use electric warmers in my ski boots, because I am a complete pussy and can't stand cold feet...they are great....hot-tronics, I wonder if they would work for hunters and fishermen...

Thurst..ummmm, I don't think that charged battery would do much to you if it got wet....maybe like sticking a 9 volt on your tongue...geez, and I thought I was a pussy..:)

My first layer is Capilene shirt which is basically like under armor. Then I put on my Patagonia R1 Zip hoodie which I make sure to tuck in to my fleece pants. Tucking in the hoody helps prevent body heat from escaping. Next I put on a fleece if its cold enough then a down sweater followed by my rain coat.

One key thing to remember is no cotton also be sure to have back up clothes with you in the event that you or someone else takes a spill.

The Patagonia stuff is great but expensive. Check out their web deals:
Men's Outdoor Clothing & Gear Sale | Patagonia

Super Down Hooded Jacket | KUIU Ultralight Hunting

this'll be my main insulator w/the pants and possibly the vest if I can swing it. I've owned this layer and managed to leave it at a diner never to be seen again. AWESOME layer. The nano is the same price and it's not even down let alone 850 fill.

Yukon Jacket | KUIU Ultralight Hunting

this is looking like it'll be my outer layer. It's most likely a better built jacket and it's $200 less than a g4. It even looks like it'll handle a few boxes in those chest pockets.

Most importantly though is that this stuff can and will pull double and even triple duty as huntin, backpacking and fishing gear. If I'm gonna spend the money it's gotta do all 3.

unfortunately this stuff is never in stock and I most likely wouldn't see it until next year not that I have the money to do it all at once anyway.

next year I'll be warm

Thurst, as far as feet go its as simple as oversized boots. I wear 18" unisulated rubbers on stand full days when highs are in the 30's. If your wearing coveralls or a bib and your boots big enough that you create a space (air pocket) between the bottom of your foot and the boot when you lift your foot it'll draw air into the top of those boots from inside your coveralls ( pant legs need to be over your boots).

colder than that=heater body suit.

i never wear insulated boots. A liner sock and a good wool, over do it and air won't move around your foot=cold

Ho hum.

Let's talk some more about our favorite and unnecessary fishing apparel that we pay for with other people's money.

Why is it that the rich white boy isnt only allowed to buy unprepared food and produce with the cash card that was given to him???

Shouldnt he be posting about deals on holiday hams from Walmart?

No deals on holiday hams this year. Seems that the pigs were fed too much to make up for the pork shortage and the hinds are now too large to use for the ham industry. Prices will be considerably higher this year.

I dont like Simms, and feel that it is unfair that he can buy all this shit with his unearned cash card, while others in the same situation of total dependency can only buy unprepared food and produce.

Why can whitey buy fishing equipment with his leech card?

GB, I've got nothing against you...so take this in a friendly way.

I roll up to the river in my Redington gear, and I'm just happy to be able to stand in a river and maybe catch some fish. Why care if the guy next to you is wearing all simms and fishing a sage rod? Who cares where or how they got it? They're having a good time, so am I. It's just fishing...

..so friendly advice: Life's a lot better if you don't worry so much about what other people have. I appreciate being concerned for people in need, but if someone has extra, why not just be happy for them?
